Source So Google wants to delete all its videos in a blink of an eye? I wonder why? Tons of great documentaries, clips, interviews, you name it.. will be gone after May 13, 2011. >_> They must be running out of server space. xD
You'd think if that were the case, that they'd find a better solution than to delete everything. Maybe something like keep awarded videos, or most viewed videso, most liked, etc. Bet we're gonna lose some public gems here. : (
Well... for one, they own YouTube. Google Video always had its problems anyways so I don't blame them. I'm sure most of the vids that were on there are uploaded elsewhere already.
I feel bad for all the Something Awful classic Let's Plays that will be forever gone after this, Google Video was where it all started for the Let's Players. Oh well, I suppose I'll live but 'tis rather sad indeed, especially considering how I originally found out about KH-Vids through Google Videos (as opposed to Youtube like everyone else).
Well, seeing as they own youtube, I thought that this sort of thing would happen sooner or later, though it is kind of annoying that they would do this. I suppose that anyone who really cares about their videos though will just download them and put them up somewhere else, but surely google could've just done some sort of merger with youtube, to make it just youtube, but with all the google videos on it? I dunno if that would even be possible though ...
I don't really mind. They're given thorough warning and the like, so there was enough time to save and reupload anything that was important. While a merge would have been nice, I imagine there were technical difficulties, (for example, whose account uploads it?) making it too confusing. This is probably the best way. It's far worse when a site is just deleted, without anyone being given the chance to make archives. I'm looking at you, ED.
Why would they do that? Instead why not just move them to a new site? Why delete videos when there are other solutions?
To be fair vimeo is 99x better for anything involving posting documentaries and longer videos. Hardly a loss lol
You don't know what their problem is, so you don't know if there are any other solutions. They might even want to take them down because they're not popular. Or just for the fun of it. I agree with Darkwatch, hardly a loss.
You know, you'd think for Google, they'd just find some other place to host the videos. It's ridiculous to just get rid of them all. I'm sure there's some great stuff in there...
This. I doubt that every user who's ever uploaded something to google is still actively uploading. Many videos will be permanently lost.
Least they gave a warning. Can't say I am all that affected by this nor that I really care. Luckily, they are allowing everyone to download their videos and such before it is all gone. Guess I might go and find something to download myself, just for the hell of it.
this is an update from youtube about topic. http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/ if you don't feel like reading the entry or too lazy, the gist is, the Google Videos are going to be automatically migrated to youtube. there, problem solved :)
