Get used to it, a lot of people don't seem to realize how ****ing terrifyingly dangerous Google is and has always been, how much information Google has on every single one of you, that if at any point Google, it's information, or it's technologies falls into the hands of the wrong people Government (see: the United States Government), we are so completely beyond screwed.

Google, essentially, is the very sapling of a Big Brother state.

not only is this illegal, but, what should we do?

this might just ruin youtube, why go through so much hassle, as far as to try and get personal information, and not only on public videos , but on private videos!?.

    this is saddening

Well you can always go to other hosting sites. YouTube is obviously a pile of crap now (well not now, but it's not going to get any better >_>).

    CTR has spoken.

If this is illegal, then how the hell did the company get this court order?

How the Hell do they expect us to remember every single Youtube vid we've ever watched? And do they really expect us to hand over our IP Addresses to them? What have they been smoking?

i'm sorry but i dont' see the big deal about this. i dont' see why i would care if someone would know what videos i watched. besides, doesn't handing over the information violate something (not sure what that would be)? if i'm missing something someone PLEASE spell it out for me

You're not expected to remember anything, google already has all of this information simply compiled in databases. Every time you've searched something up on Google, every time you've looked for a video on Youtube, Google has logged your IP address, logged what you were searching for, and logged what websites you went to after searching or what videos you then watched.

Google has been doing this since the very first time you looked something up using their search engine, and has been for the past 10 years. They know where you live now, where you've lived in the past, depending on what kind of information you've inadvertently given it through your searches, it probably knows what school you go to, what bank your family uses, everything you've ever purchased online, and so on.

The judge presiding over the case, one Judge Louis L. Stanton, ruled in favor of Viacom. Even flouting the Video Privacy Protection Act.

My complaint here, along with the writer of the first article, is that Youtube users do not have the opportunity to defend themselves in court as the Video Privacy Protection Act clearly states.

I don't think many users are given any notice that this is going on, as I've visited Youtube several times and they don't even mention this anywhere on the site. And anyone who doesn't browse the news might not catch this either.

And MuffinMan is right, both sites log data about what you're looking for and what sites you have visted. Youtube keeps databases of the videos uploaded, watched, and removed. What Viacom wants from Google is the source code that identifies a video as copyrighted material and the databases Youtube has kept.

It doesn't matter if it was in a US court or not(and it was ruled in a NYC court btw) her IP would still be attached to certain videos in the Youtube database. Youtube isn't just limited to America after all. If Google hands over the database to Viacom, her IP would be included in it.

A point that many people are missing is that all of the data being handed over to Viacom is anonymous. They won't have any personal data from any Youtube accounts. All they want is to find out what the viewing statistics are for both legal and illegal material on Youtube to see which is more popular.

If you think about it, if you haven't done anything illegal you should have nothing to hide and nothing to worry about, not that they could trace anything back to anyone anyway (Well, not with this data anyway. Who know knows what they may request in the future)

I still don't get why Viacom needs to know what videos everyone has watched. Thats pretty much invastion of privacy. Why doesn't Google send us a letter say, "Hey! Viacom owns you now."

No one stated they were giving account information, because frankly they don't need to give something so arbitrary as your account information. Google is handing over the IP addresses of users, an IP address is your internet footprint, your internet signature designated by your ISP, a mark tied to your very computer, an IP address can be tracked to your very house address.

Having someone's IP address is much more dangerous then someone's account information. My account on Youtube could easily be completely different in name and password then that of, say, KH-Vids or my Email. But your IP address, your IP address is the very breadcrumb trail your computer leaves behind on every single website you visit, your IP address follows you everywhere, and with it someone can know of your presence on every website you visit, and use it as a port directly into your computer if they so wish.

Now I'm not stating the Viacom are super-hackers and they're going to hijack the computer of every IP address they receive, I'm simply saying that because of the very nature of how Google works, they can keep track of everything you do when you use their services. Google as of now is not necessarily a dangerous entity, but the very information Google compiles on everyone that uses it is very dangerous.
