I can play Pokemon without level grinding or anything rpg related and beat the game... I can at ffvii without using materia or switching weapons- the only rpg aspects in that game.

 

Let's not change the subject here, everybody knows that the JRPG definition is outdated and sucks, but it's been around since for ages and it would be difficult to change it. This whole "Character Action Game" thing is pretty new though, so there's no reason for it to have the same problems.

 

you don't need red orbs to use Combo A or if you REALLY need it High time/Helm Breaker. All style points change are your score rating and red orb drops. Not really necessary to beat the game.

Also I think you're forgetting the role playing aspect of RPGs. Vtm:B certainly has no grinding and can be beaten without changing weapons (aside from using the gun in the tutorial) but that's certainly an RPG.

CAGs are a branch of best 'em ups as stated earlier in the thread so I don't see how it's surprising that if you blatantly ignore the elements of a CAG, you get a beat 'me up.

No, but you could easily use blood for other elements to lean towards survival like devil trigger gauge, items, and more. Just because you can break the game if you're an expert doesn't mean it's genre definition is now lost.
