I don't want to work in the railroad industry, I'm going to be a computer programmer. Try doing that without an education.

    Enjoy your hard labor.

    It's important.
It helps us make our decisions in life.

Without education I don't think I'd know as much as I do today. It can be quite fun sometimes. And yeah, you're right, I think some things definately need changing. I want to learn Spanish, German, Russian & French but I don't think I'm ever going to do that because my school only has the languages Greek and Italian<< they're okay subjects, but I know how to speak Greek, I'm alright with Italian, but I'd really like to study another language as well. Different subjects, more subjects, things that will help us what we want to become need to be included in our schedule and they should be our choices.

School is there for you to learn, you can have fun and learn at the same time too. And if you just shut up and listen for now, learn whatever you have to, whatever is cumpolsary then you can do whatever you want later on in life.

Yeah they have to change the school rules and whatnot. The teachers really don't care it's so bad that's it's sad.

Ohh and i'm not lying my class has 40 kids.Nobody does any work and then the teachers get mad at us all the time.Teachers even curse at us.I remeber last week when my teacher Miss Carson cursed out my friend TJ.lol she was saying he's a ****ing idiot and whatnot. When Tj told the principal she said he was making it up.He then got a suspention for a week i think!!

It should in some states, but not as a whole. In some states, the grading system should be fixed, and sometimes the teachers just don't do their jobs well enough. But maybe a little more schooling or more money put into could be needed to "keep up" with the world. But I'm not very well educated on world education, so I don't really know.

Well a tacher admitted it once that yeah go to school get a job woo! But you can do that at home. She said the whole point is a) you get help with work from the experts at the subjects b) It helps build your social standing, gets you friends, allows you to liv a happy friendly life.

^Yeah, I think the main reason I'm attending public school instead of homeschooling is because of the social aspect. It's important to mingle with people your own age, and while sometimes it can be dramatic and awful dealing with social situations, that's true for any part of life. If you don't build social skills, you're going to lose out on a lot of relationships and life experience.

I think that the teachers hired should be different. There should be a certain criteria, one that my school usually follows, and so far it's worked for me. The teachers should be able to 1) discipline the students (in other words, the students should respect them enough to listen to them; this was the downfall of one of my teachers last year, who was fired) 2) have a connection with the students (ties in with the first one), 3) not only know their subject but be enthusiastic about it (this will better encourage the learner to be enthusiastic about it as well) 4) come up with fun and interesting ways to learn in order to entice the student.

This is also a small one: in elementary schools, they need to STOP teaching children in English class that "said is dead". Using the word "said", according to elementary school teachers, is reprehensible and should be replaced with something more descriptive. While this is a semi-good lesson, one who studies how to write narratives later learns that the word "said" is actually the most appropriate thing to use sometimes. In fact, if a writer doesn't use it ever, they are considered a novice.

A lot of people might not agree with me on this, but I think there should be a maximum age for the earning of a teaching degree. Not for having one, just for earning it. That way, new teachers will understand the childeren, and older teachers will be more able to adapt. In my opinion, it's win-win.

Yeah I know what you mean.

I keep being forced to got to school where I learn almost nothing and am extremely bored. I get told that homeschooling isn't a good idea because I won't get the social experience but how is it helping me to go to a school where almost everyone hates me and I get bullied all the time.

Also just because i'm only 14 means I shouldn't be able to make my own choices. I see how it works. Everyone gets free will but not until you're 20. Are you not human until then? I know several younger people who are more intelligent then lots of adults I know.

Let's be realistic for just a second here.
What if we just let every kid do whatever they wanted?
Well, we'd have the majority of them dead, and most of them with no hope in life. Honestly, you just can't function in the real world without an education. The problem is that public schools don't provide a good education for the most part, just a mediocre one.

My maths teacher is an epic fail.
All she does is explain things in a way we dont understand or just completely gives us pointless lessons

Never answers any of my Questions.
She just ignores Me and walks away

I sit around my friends , But i Do not talk to them alot But whenever someone around me speaks My maths teachers walks over to me and tells me to shut up :\

She also sent one of my friends out into the hallway for half the lesson because he had answerd A question wrong.

All the homework She gives us Are Usually Grade A or B work.
Even though its the start of the year And most of us Struggle with Them.
Aslo the homework is usually set for the day after it was given.

I Also have to Deal with being Constantly reminded That I have to get top marks from everything because apparently I have the highest target grade for my GCSE's

I dont think people like this should be Teachers.

    School is the tits.
You get to hang out with friends all day basically. I mean it's my senior year, I don't have to do crap except show up and pass the tests. Then I get to go to art school and study music & audio production. I'm going to live the dream!
Anyway, on topic... I have to poke at the part about school wasting our life without us actually having fun for 20 years. I completely disagree. I think this is the most fun part of our lives before we are stuck working all the time. It's not a waste, if anything it teaches us how to be real people.
    So big up education.

See, this is what's wrong. You show up to school and pass the test without learning anything. You're going to art school, but can you honestly say you're going to be prepared? And if you are, will it be from public school?
And there's plenty of outlets other than public school for people to socialize, or "become real people"

Are you kidding me? I wouldn't be passing the tests if I wasn't learning anything. Of course I'm learning, it's just easy. And yes there are other social outlets, I participate in those too. I am prepared for art school, and no it's not from public school as I am going to study something they don't teach in school.
Earlier in the thread you questioned the quality of public school education. It's not the best but that's why I am going to art school when I graduate. I don't know what you want to be. You could be like me, I have no way to cultivate my passion in school so I am going to college after to get better and focus my studies. However I don't see how that makes public school bad and how it makes what I do wrong.

You'd be surprised at how easy it is to get straight A's and never learn anything.
I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong, you should definitely pursue higher education after school.
But there's plenty of things wrong with public schools. Many of them are of poor quality, have awful teachers (like one that was just mentioned), many teach things over and over again, and...ugh, i could go on forever.

I appreciate that. A lot of people would be more arrogant.

Yeah, this is the case in a lot of places. I think I am lucky to live in a great school district. There are ones just outside it that are terrible though. Some in Detroit are so poor that they hire teachers that don't actually have degrees or secondary education. I don't know how bad your situation is but I can see why you would have these feelings.

Luckily, I don't have a situation. I was lucky enough to be homeschooled by my grandma for two years, after that I went to college. Before that, it was just elementary/middle school, which wasn't that bad, but not good either.

Yeah, a good number of the teachers at my high school didn't even have a degree in the subject they taught. When my guidance counselor heard I wanted to be a teacher, he asked if I would teach there after getting my degree and I said no because I wouldn't be able to tolerate the attitudes or "credentials" some teachers have.

But not everyone should get a higher education.
After all, pizza doesn't deliver itself.
At least until we find a high tech way to transport it without human need, in which case, you're screwed.

Of course, some people do just fine without a higher education. My sister's father works at a factory, he didn't go to college, he makes enough money to get by, and he loves his job. I see nothing wrong with that. My father finished high school back at the Dominican Republic, didn't attend college, he now either owns or manages a company. Society needs a way to ensure that everyone contributes. School isn't for some people, after a certain age, they shouldn't be forced to go if it's not going to them any good. But there should be something that they can work at to gain more skills or learn or contribute to the community, etc.

    Quote of the day!

Thanks for your view, that opened my eyes a bit more. The specific examples at least.
Every teacher here has a degree but that doesn't mean they are all good. My only D was taught by a teacher who never wore shoes in class and always drank a liter of Faygo each day. Lemon & Lime sparkling water. That was freshman year... I have gotten better since then but I swear, he had no clue what was going on.
