It really can though. It's so played out now that I almost cringe every time someone does the dance. People kill things fast.

But at the same time, it leads me to think: if something being made mainstream and overplayed makes it bad, is it really that good in the first place?

Cause I still love old Linkin Park songs and the Avengers and Halo and other such things no matter how much I hear/see them.

Is anything mainstream exceptionally good? no.
For some reason I can't explain, the mainstream media loves to latch on to things that are either mediocre or average at best. The problem is the people who let the mainstream media dictate what is good and what is not good, based on whether or not the thing in question is mainstream or not.
this song isn't omygodbestsongever quality, but it is amusing, and because it gets so much attention, its now massive.

this is more of a problem with music and television than it is movies.

Gangam Style is popular because it's catchy. Those other things you mentioned are popular because they're great compositions. That's why the first one gets old fast.

    A song comes out.

It does well and get popular.

People complain that they like it, but that it's everywhere.

Bottom line they hate that a song they like has success.

    Oh people.

Well, then, it's a good thing that you don't decide what's good. You only decide what you like.

You're right. The mainstream media decides what's good and it should be abundantly clear that I don't agree.

I have so much respect for you right now

Anyway, I dont think mainstream is bad to be honest. Its a way of informing the listeners of the popular music tastes of the present. You dont like a song then you can always change the station. You can choose to be part of the mainstream group or not. Its not like people are forcing you to listen to something. Excessive playing does get annoying, but who's to say you have to listen to it EVERYTIME its on a mainstream radio station? See what I'm getting at? Its annoying seeing a song like gungam style everywhere but if you like the song then you like the song, and I don't think excessive playing should be a problem. If it is, turn off your radio and enjoy what you like. Simple.

    ...

I used to think something was good because it was good, not because fewer people liked it. Guess I was wrong there.
