Saw this at wired.com... What do you think about video games and science in general, or just this particular case?
I think science and video games do, in fact, go hand in hand. Weather we realize this or not we do use scientific means in video games to figure things out. I found that article quite refreshing to read. Thanx for relaying that to me.
I tend to think so, that science and video games tend to go together. Won't be long that instead of disssecting a frog in biology, students are playing Trauma Center.
Yep! Science and video games fit together perfectly. Everybody always tries to come up with a different method of how beating certain games and scientist also do the same thing with other different problems. :D
I agree. Also, this fits perfectly with the game Portal. It demonstrates a perfect example of awesomeness physics and how to defiey them. also, GLADoS is awesome! I want cake but the cake is a lie!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
True we don't think we are using science, and tend to say we are just figuring out a strategy for beating the game.
There are some pretty 'realistic' touching games that can teach people a variety of things, to include science. Maybe in the future more games would be developed that would teach more and well, we always learn easier when we actually want to and the subject is presented in an interesting fashion. Also, learning through a story etc is something more intriguing to many people. We often remember books we've read or plot lines to games better than homework it seems. Also, a lot of us do study the game mechanics and structure of games, how to set up characters to be their best etc and strategies that work in different scenarios. It's quite true.
As much as I like this idea, it really isn't a significant portion of the widespread gaming community that does this kind of thing. First you must narrow it to RPGers and real time strategy players seeing as most other games like platformers, and fps's include puzzles that are simple train of logic problems or guess and check problems not unlike the common Rubik's cube. Then I'd venture to say we go even further and narrow our group to MMO players since a normal one player RPG can be conquered with simpler more straightforward methods as far as I've seen it. Battle strategy goes about as far as rock paper scissors in most RPGs it's only in the MMOs and real time strategy games that you can make use of a complete and complex strategy that would require scientific thinking to solve them most efficiently. So, although some games may be a boon to science they are by no means in the majority. Games are there to be enjoyed, you can learn many many things through them, but in this instance, scientific method really doesn't affect the overall gaming community very much at all. At least that's how it seems from this side.
Huh. Interesting facts here. I never thought it would be using Excel sheets to make how the monster behaves. I guess it does mix and matches up. :3
