When I look back into my (kinda big) collection of Naruto mangas, I finally got to read this again... I just want to tell you all about what's got to be one of the saddest moments; Gaara's history, and what he has been through... And what made him like this...

    ---
As a little kid, Gaara sat on a swing on a playground, not far away a few other kids where playing soccer. One kid accidentally shot the ball so high in the air that it landed on top of a large rock which was unclimbable for those who didn't know the Kabenobori No Jutsu(wallclimbing technique) yet. They were about to go home, while Gaara got the ball using his sand to reach it.

They kids should've been grateful, but they were frightened standing face to face with the offspring of the man who once destroyed the cillage. As the kids ran away, Gaara reached out his hand, calling:

    ""Don't leave me, please!"

Gaara's sand followed one of the kids, attempting to pull him back. Right before the sand could hurt the kid, Yashamaru jumped in(Gaara's friend), causing Gaara to calm down.

Later, Gaara went all emo and tried to cut himself, but the sand didn't let him. It was protecting him, all along. That's why he's never been physically wounded, or even hurt at all. At that moment Yashamaru came in again with a bandage on her head. The sand had hit Yashamaru while she was protecting that kid from it. Gaara apologised, but Yashamaru said he didn't had to, it only left a scratch anyway, didnt hurt that much. Right then, one of my most memorizable quotes in the Naruto manga appeared. Gaara asked Yashamaru:

"Yashamaru... What does it feel like... pain?"

I don't know why, but I actually felt something in my heart. I was actually moved by a comic. Yashamaru couldn't really explain what pain is, the first thing she could say was 'it's hard' and 'not pleasant'. Gaara asked:

    "Then... Do you hate me?"

Gaara felt bad for wounding Yashamaru, but she told her that it's a common thing in life, and that she forgives Gaara for it. Gaara then tells Yashamaru that he does feel a pain. It isn't a bleeding wound, but it does hurt terribly. Yashamaru took the knife Gaara used to cut himself a while ago. She cut herself in her finger to learn Gaara somthing. Her finger started to bleed a bit, it seemed to hurt. She then told Gaara that bleeding wounds may look painful at first sight but the pain disappears again in time, while the worst injuries are from the heart and are a lot harder to cure. There aren't any salves or medicines, and you may carry the pain for the rest of your life. But there is only thing that can cure the pain in the heart... love. Gaara didn't get it. "How do you get that?" Gaara asked. Yashamaru told him that he already has love, it's all in his heart. It was because of Gaara's mother that the sand is able to protect him, ensuring him never to get wounded. After this deep chat between the two friends, Gaara thanked Yashamaru for stopping him a few hours ago from accidentally wounding that kid.

Gaara decided to bring the kid he accidentally wounded some medicine. When knocking on his front door, the kid opened, saying:

    "Get out of here... monster..."

Gaara was shocked by the kid's reaction, and walked away sad. While walking through the dtreets he bumped into a man. The man scolded him, but he couldn't finish his line before realising he was stinding in front of the offspring who once destroyed the village. Still angry about the kid's reaction, Gaara turned himself to the man.The sand attacked the man. It killed him. Many bystanders approached the event, but Gaara walked away as if it didn't do him anything.

That night, Gaara sat on a roof of a building of the sand village. Right now, he was convinced that he was a monster. Never did he feel such a pain in his heart than now. He remembered what Yashamaru told him, that love is the only remedy for a wounded heart.

Right then, several kunais were thrown in Gaara's back, all being reflected by the sand. Gaara turned around, as he saw a strange ninja standing behind him. The figure had a mask on, so it wasn't possible to recognize the him/her. What...? Why...? Why only me?! Gaara thought, folding his hands into fists.

Gaara ccreated a powerful wave of sand, which knocked the foe against a wall. Gaara took the mask, reavealing the figure's face. His eyes widened. It was Yashamaru stained in blood. Gaara grabbed to his chest. He immediatly felt a heavily painful stitch in his heart. He got on his knees, and bursted into tears. Crying, Gaara asked Yashamaru why she was attempting to kill him. Yashamaru answered:

"I got orders to kill you."

Yashamaru had received orders from Gaara's father, Kazekage, to kill his son. Yashamaru explained why. From birth, Gaara's father made him gain possessed by Shukaku from the sand. But because Gaara wasn't able to control the power of the sand, he would eventually bring the Sand Village in danger. Gaara understood that Yashamaru couldn't refuse. However, Yashamaru said she could've done that. If she wanted to. Now, here comes a quote by Yashamaru that I'll never forget:

"Probably... Somewhere deep in my heart... I hate you."

Yashamaru couldn't love someone who was one of the reasons why her sister died at his birth. She tried so hard to love Gaara, but she couldn't. Gaara was one of the reasons Yashamaru's sister was sacrificed by the village while she cursed the village. Since that time, Yashamaru had always carried such a terrible pain in her heart. Gaara remebered what she said that afternoon.

There aren't any salves or medicines, and you may carry the pain for the rest of your life.

Gaara's name was chosen by Yashamaru's sister. "The name of this boy is Gaara.".. The carnage that only loves himself..." But she didn't gave Gaara that name out of love or concern; she gave him that name so that he could exist to embody the hate Yashamaru's sister felt for this world on the moment of her death.

"Nobody has ever loved you...!" Yashamaru then told Gaara.

Yashamaru then begged Gaara to kill her. Still thinking about the false words Yashamaru told him, he roared out of pure hate. A mark appeared on Gaara's head. It was the kanji for love.

Gaara then said in himself: I am alone... I will not trust or love anyone ever again... I am alone...

Yeah, I was going to point out that Yashamaru was a guy as well. He's Gaara's uncle, if I remember right. He does look very feminine, though, and I thought he was a girl the first time I read the manga, so it's not just you. I do feel bad for Gaara, though. A lot of the things that happened to him aren't his fault. Yashamaru, the only person Gaara trusted, betrayed him. That's probably why he went insane. It's even scarier to me that Naruto could've ended up exactly like him. I'm happy that Gaara's happy after the time skip, though.

Happens I'm just up to episode 76 now O.o
I agree with envious, about Naruto coming close to ending up like Gaara... Too bad gaara didn't grow up in konohagakure too..
I like how the back-storys are revealed in mid-battles. I didn't like Gaara so much until I saw the first parts of his story.

Gaara is one of my favorite characters from Naruto. Reading through his past brought me to tears. My hearts goes out to him. I'm so glad that he and Naruto became friends. Their bond is one of the strongest I've seen in any anime. These writers really know how to reach out to their audience. As far as Yashamaru is concerned... I'm glad he blew himself up. In my opinion he deserved it for telling Gaara the biggest lie: that he was loved. He's a sick and twisted person. Though... I do feel really, really bad for Gaara.
