Then it would be appropriate to say something like, "Why is this thread staying alive?" But as far as the hypothetical situation you put into place goes, you cannot say that. Even if you could, you already used the"-ing" prefix so it would be grammatically incorrect again. But by saying that I'm sure you realize now that you just argued against something that I completely bullshitted and I have now found an argument that actually works.
