It only took me five months.

I liked it well enough, though it did have a few problems overall. Like near the end. For the entirety of Orphan's Cradle I found myself wondering if I was near the end yet. And I wish they'd given the final Crystalarium upgrade before the end game.

Fearless gives this game a 4 out of 5.
Now I need to play the sequel.

Good to see it not get hate from someone. I had more or less the same opinion.

    The Sequel is better.

Basically, was the story worth playing the game?

    To an extent?
Personally, I thought the gameplay was pretty fun, although it did get slightly tedious at times. I would have preferred a traditional EXP level up system. But yea, the story and characters were pretty much the best part.

I'm glad more people are coming out as having liked it.

When the reviews dropped I think a lot of people were afraid to say it was good, lest they be bombarded with arguments on the contrary. It really does go to show how heavily the social desirability bias is entrenched in the review scene.

I feel like one of the reasons it's so disliked is that, while it is a good game, it just didn't live up to the standards the Final Fantasy series have been held up to in the past.

All this polarizing reception to FF13 actually makes me want to play the game even more just so I can finally see what all the fuss was about. But I've still got 8 more FFs to go.

The only thing I felt that was hindering the game from being good was the game itself. It was then where I believe Sqaure tried too hard to appeal to a broader audience, introducing it to casual gamers and all. In that end, however, it let go too much of what many considered to be the staples of Final Fantasy (such as no traditional towns, traditional EXP, etc.) and thus, lost the "luster" that the previous games had.

Story-wise, I could tell that they had cut out a crap ton of content, even once you get to Gran Pulse. I liked the characters of the first game better than the sequels that came after, even if they had at most little development in their arcs. It had an ensemble feel, but there certainly was the "it's all about Lightning" undertone that unfortunately took over in the sequels.
they basically just scrapped and ignored everything that happened in the first game with this time-travel sh*t, which made the character developments (again, even with how little it was) pointless and made me feel pretty friggen broken-hearted

It may seem like I hate this (and I don't hate it, it just wasn't my favorite), but then again, even I was surprised by the amount of backlash this game had at first from the gaming community.

One thing I did love were the character designs of the main cast so I did enjoy looking at the game at least

I want to play the game to see what all the negativity was about, but I won't do that until I've played every main FF game before it (and I've got 8 to go). That way, I can compare it to the others and see for myself if it really did fail to live up to its predecessors.

For a sec I thought you were one of those backwards folk that thought all the FF games should be played in order.

Well excuse me for wanting to experience a series in its fullest.

I mean I assumed you thought the stories were all connected and thus you must play from I to XV in order to understand the games

What, no. I know each one is separate story-wise. I mean I want to see for myself how the quality changes from one game to another.

    Here's how 13-2 went.

"Let's take everything people complained about in the first game, and do the polar opposite of that for this one."

Serah wasn't a playable character? BAM, Serah is one of the only two playable characters.
Not enough NPCs? BAM, Feckin NPCs all up in this byotch.
Game too linear? BAM, clusterfeck of a storyline.
Leveling up too much like FFX? BAM, GLHF trying to figure out how to get max stats.
Vanille's accent fake? BAM, you're an idiot, it was real the whole time, but we took her out of all but 2 minutes of the game.
Playable Black protagonist? BAM, he only shows up for 45 seconds of cut-scene.
Battle system too enjoyable? BAM, we took away your ability to do a full tri-paradigm system.
Not enough stupid BS to do? BAM monster collecting.
Summoning too OP? BAM, now your summoning is reduced to monster collecting.
Not enough side quests? BAM, the entire game feels like side quests.
Not enough Liam O'Brien? BAM, he's going to make sex with your ears for half the game.
Not enough annoying characters? BAM, Chocolina.
Game too long? BAM, cut the play time in half.
Characters deal too much damage? BAM, max damage is 1/3 in the game, have fun feeling like you're underpowered after the transition.
Serah not your favorite character? BAM, feck you.
Serah IS your favorite character? BAM, feck you, too.
Not enough mention of the word "Paradox"? BAM, every 15 fecking seconds.
