Square is diving into the Uncanny Valley again. Strictly speaking I think the new one looks better, but I'm not sure that it is a good thing for the game. I really like the moves that Square has done in the graphics field, but it is very risky in business.

what do you mean the moves they've done in the graphics field? And why is it risky?

The reason why I prefer the 2009 one is because Noctis isn't staring into my soul. 0_0

    December, please arrive already..DX

Because of uncanny valley. Not sure how true it is, but from only one screen shot, I really can't judge. Looks a bit creepy to me, though.

I like the 2009 picture used too. Maybe it's because it's "perfectly fantastical"? Like, it looks really human, yet somewhat perfect in that fantasy sense. I don't know xD

Dear Agito Lord, please give us more Versus XIII news. Thank you. =]

I'm thinking that Square-Enix has been spending most of their time on the graphics. Which isn't a bad thing. They are gorgeous. But I would like to see more of those gimmicks in the gameplay.

Square loves to push limitations and it generally works very well for them (like the original Chain of Memories having cutscenes on the GBA) but graphics have reached a level that is called the Uncanny Valley. If you don't know, people like things looking more and more realistic up to a point. Shortly before looking actually real acceptance takes a nose dive. The space where we dislike it up until theoretically it looks so real we have trouble distinguishing it from reality, is called the Uncanny Valley. It puts engineers at a weird place because within the Uncanny Valley people don't like it as much so you don't get as much money and it costs more money to get there, thus the company receives losses on the project and it inhibits further research to try and get across. Keystone example of this also comes from Square in the form of Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. Yes there were other problems in the move besides the Uncanny Valley, but it was doubtlessly a critical point.

So considering the amount of time and money they've already put into this project I'm surprised they are willing to make that gamble again.

Loving the updated engine but I really don't like Noctis's new hair. If people want more realistic styled hair then we have Machina for that. B|

    Anyways...

You've been following the news about Versus right? Pretty much everything about the gameplay screams, "I'M BETTER THAN XIII AND XIII-2 IN EVERY WAY." Apparently even all the cutscenes will give players some input as to how they'll go. D:

    I concur.

Yes, I have heard that as well. I am uncertain whether or not I would like that. I personally enjoy cut-scenes as videos so I can enjoy what's going on rather than staying focus and "still play the video game." I could see some scenes being successful, but I would prefer a healthy mixture of both regular scenes and interactive. If any.

To be honest, I like the 2011 one more, mainly because I like the detail in the hair (so shineyyyyyyyyy what does he use on it o.O). The only thing that puts me off is how weird he he looks with his moth half open like that.

    Yes. Yes I have. ^^

And I would love to see how the conversation between Noctis and Stella at the party will turn out as the player controls it.

Hmm... I just remembered that FFVII was kind of like that. Depending on responses you choose leads up to who you go on a date at the Golden Saucer. I wonder if that's how it would be... However I am still not a fan of that in a more modern game...

I hope it will be released in 2012. It's been five years....has it been worth it?

[Well...of course, for me, it has been worth it]

Whoa...that IS a long time. 0_0 I had no idea the design process began in 2003....I guess I just concentrated on the news after 2006...I've got to learn to pay attention to interviews.

    EDIT
Dengeki PlayStation has the latest on FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII… well, sort of.

Speaking in an interview, Tetsuya Nomura briefly commented on the status of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series. With FINAL FANTASY Type-0 out of the way, Nomura says that it’s Versus XIII’s turn. Of course. he’s a little excited!

As for Type-0, Nomura doesn’t feel that the game is totally finished. He claims he’ll get the feeling of a complete game once players have had their chance to experience it themselves.
