Just like Christhor said, horrible FF film, decent sci-fi film. Though I always viewed it as a 'testing-the-waters' kind of thing from Square. Hell, they planned on using the protagonist as a virtual actress and have her play different roles in other movies.

You're missing the point. He isn't saying that it isn't 'fantasy' despite having 'fantasy' in the title, he's saying that it isn't Final Fantasy despite having Final Fantasy in the title. ~~The Cid's name was even spelled Sid, not Cid.~~
If I made a game called Pokemon Metal where the main character is a blue robot that has to fight 8 robot leaders before fighting the final four robot masters and taking all of their powers, that's Megaman even if it has similar points to Pokemon and has the Pokemon name. He's not saying it's a different company, just that it betrays the name of Final Fantasy.

They thought the lifestream concept was enough to call the movie Final Fantasy. In FFSW the enemy is a ghost life-stream, in FFAC it' s geostigma, which is a diseased life-stream. In the end SW feels more like a James Cameron' s "Aliens" rip-off than a Final Fantasy. Meh.
The best (and only good ?) scene of the movie was cut out btw :
