Which style of Fighter do you prefer?

  2. 3-Dimensional Fighters. Tekken is a BEAST!

  3. I don't care, both styles are awesome either way.

2D is best. The most that 3D brings to the experience is probably side-stepping attacks, I guess. But that's just a cheap dodging mechanic that doesn't really interest me.

3D all the way. I have loved Tekken since the start and I still do. I just like the game play a lot more than 2D.

It all depends on the rest of the game mechanics. If it is like Dissidia where you may have attacks that affect the area around you, I prefer 3D. This is also better for the EX Mechanic where it would be boring to just go to the other side of the screen to grab the EX Core. And the RPG element work well too by giving you a large and nonlinear area to use and test out all the abilities that you've learned. The control scheme also pretty much requires that it would be in 3D since it would be boring and tedious to only press left or right depending on what side of your character the enemy is on. Super Smash Bros, in opinion, is better suited to a 3D fighter style.

However, if it is simpler than that where you have A/B/Directional Button/Combo based controls, I prefer 2D. There's no need to overcomplicate something that's already enjoyable in its simplicity.

I enjoy the more fast paced nature of a game like Melty Blood where "HOLYSHITIMAIRDASHINGALLOVERTHEPLACE****WHYNEROANDHISJUMPC"
2D just allows for more creativity in the character actions, frame cancels like in Guilty Gear, body morphing like in Darkstalkers, all that.
Virtua Fighter IS one of the best fighting games ever though

I personally prefer 3d games because there are many different fighting combinations.
It is also better in graphics and I find the slowness of 2d very boring.

I find that each in its own is special and can both be complex depending on how they are made. 2D has always been the classic and is always easy to figure out. When you add in the third dimension is when things get a bit complicated and only the die-hard players will succeed in going far. But I always found Soul Caliber to be a fun 3d fighter as it adds weapons into the fight.
