Which style of Fighter do you prefer?

  1. 2-Dimensional Fighters. Street Fighter FTW!

  2. 3-Dimensional Fighters. Tekken is a BEAST!

  3. I don't care, both styles are awesome either way.

First off, I just want to say, that this is NOT a "Which is better?" thread, it's a "What's your opinion?" thread. Just thought I'd put that out there.

Fighting games. The genre of Video games where one (or more) character(s) are put against one (or more) other character(s). They both fight it out until the opponents Health Gauge is depleted. (Or in the case of Super Smash Brothers, Enough points are earned/You are the last one standing.)

So here's my question for those who enjoy fighting games over other genre's:

Which style of fighter do you like best, 2D or 3D, and why?

Examples of 2D fighters would be games like Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, Blazblue etc.

Examples of 3D fighters would be Soul Calibur, Tekken, Bloody Roar, etc.

3D. I just find 2D a bit plain, it's always just go foward, jump over the person, hit them. At least in 3D I think you can try to be a little more creative

I do agree that 3D fighters are a bit more interesting to look at, but 2D fighters tend to have faster-paced gameplay (An example being the Marvel vs Capcom series).

But yeah, you do have a valid point there.

I prefer 3D fighters, although a few 2D's I strongly enjoy. Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros. really being the only ones.
2D seems to be basically *Jump over Punch* or, *Push to edge of stage and repeatedly punch*
Even though that's pretty much what Street Fighter is, it's got a bit of...Idunno, an edge to it.
And Super Smash Bros. is pretty fast paced, with its dodging system and gameplay.

3D is pretty creative battling, but the controls can sometimes be a bit edgy.

a bit edgy yes, but so worth the battles because they're more creative and you think more about how to do it.

Personally, I always preferred 3-D. The environment isn't as flat as it is in 2-D, which I always thought to be pretty restricting movement wise.

Though, in terms of actual combat, I'd have to hand t over to 2-D. In 3-D you can get out of someone's face when they're/you're attacking, but in 2-D you can't escape that far, and you're forced to be really intense when attacking.

At least from ones I've played. :B

I prefer 2D fighters over 3D. To be honest, 3D fighters never really gave me that feeling "HOLYJDGJHIJIEDHJIET ITS SO FAST PACED!11." 2D fighters just seem more right to me.

2D is fast? Never seemed that way to me.

There are two fighters where you can technically "escape" for a short while, those two being Smash Bros. with it's larger stages, and Marvel vs Capcom 3 with it's Advancing Guard maneuver(Except it's not a very large escape at all). Other than that I agree with you on all of your points.

They're definately more fast-paced than 3D fighters, but they're not so fast that the fight's only last 10 seconds.

One of my favorite fighting games is Soul Calibur II, but other than that I strongly prefer 2D fighters.
But in the end it depends on the game itself. I could never play something as slow as Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat without getting bored, but games like Melty Blood and Guilty Gear definitely keep me preferring 2D.
Now if some of those 3D fighters can add in some more advanced techniques and faster gameplay, then I might enjoy them more.

Hey how come Street Fighter and Tekken are the only examples?! Hahaa!

I personally enjoy both, they have their positives and negatives. I'm "game" for the classics, but i can't back down a good 3D fighter. Such ones include: Naruto Ultimate Ninja series, and 3D spinoffs Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series. Those just blew me away.

2D all the way. I enjoy the 2D style a lot more, especially in games like Guilty Gear and King of Fighters. I like 3D fighters as well, but I've been playing 2D since I was a kid. <3

I can't wait for Skull Girls.

I like 3D fighter's more, it gives me a more realistic feel and the background's and graphic's (For all the major console's) are very well. Beside's, it's the 21st Century, there's gonna be alot more game's like this, i usually try to get comfortable to the new stuff, not regarding all the really popular old games.

While I do agree that the 3D fighters tend to have a more realistic feel to them in terms of graphics, there are some good 21st Century 2D fighters out there. Street Fighter 4 and MvC3 are two examples that I can think of right now.

The way I see it, the game can have the most amazing graphics in the universe, but if the Gameplay isn't good, then it was wasted effort.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja 5. I think 2-D owns to be honest. It's kind of classic feeling and that's what I lean towards the most. Barely anyone has heard of it, but the one 2-D fighter for SNES, Power Instinct, was the best fighting game I have ever played. Next to, God I'll get flamed, Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3 and above, and then Tekken, and then SSB. Naruto Ultimate Ninja was really good in my opinion because of how fast-paced it is. And the ultimate Justus and all the different combos. Also leveling up each character. Maxed out Itachi=FTW. I ocassionally watch Shippuden, but I still play those games a lot. 3-D Fighting games never seemed to have a good plot either. Kind of like pr0n.

I'm going to have to with 3-D, too, as it's outright just better graphics.

That's not to say that 2-D is obsolete, but these days, people care mostly about graphics, so they always side with 3-D.

I'm kind of in-between, I guess. I like 2-D for certain things, but 3-D for certain things.

That's a misconception a lot of people have; Blazblue is a 2D game, but it looks really crisp and unique. Good 2D is not inferior to 3D, it's just different. It really depends on what feeling the game wants to convey.

3D games are often used for more realistic games.

i'm ok with either one. i don't really have a preference. there are fighting games in both categories that work well. 3D: Soul Calibur. 2D: Marvel vs. Capcom. the thing i really care about is how well they balance the fighters in these games.

I'm not exactly the biggest fighting game player, but from my experiences the third dimension does absolutely nothing to make it a better game. Nothing at all. If anything it just makes it harder to controll, though there's usually not even that. I like 2D better, it seems more stylized, fun and unique. Though in the end they're all just two sides of the same coin, so I can do with either.

The fighting engine in Yakuza is better than any fighting game tho c:
