Check your privilege. You don't get to talk about how human you feel a character is if they're your gender because your gender is well represented.

Or some shit like that. I don't know. Who actually believes I'm being serious right now?

But seriously, most game protags are written like someone who's on the outside looking in- it's why Shepard is able to always be a pillar of correct choices unless the player judges too rationally. It's much different when you have consider a kneejerk reaction. Player characters also always have bitchin' sense of directions and always know how to be cool or at the very least collected- even when they're being mocked (Chrono Trigger, FFX, Alan Wake). Even able to laugh off serious murder where in real life that type of behavior would be sociopathic (Uncharted). It's because of escapism practices. Both designers and writers use satisfaction as that means of escapism. I won't point out if it's good or bad because it's really none of my business how you choose to escape reality for a few hours. If you want escapsism in the means of a average person in t-shirts and jeans, do it up. In fact, it probably means you should play Persona as there's a lot of enchanted elements there, even if it has a really grounded presentation.

    Jooooooooooooooooooooooooo KING

Honestly, I actually prefer there being a mix of writing styles for characters: I love my Dante and my Joker and my Sargent Johnson and my Bayonetta but I also love characters like Heather Mason and Sniper Wolf and Ellie and (my version of) Lee Everett.

    Also.

Back on the topic of FFXV...I'm glad this'll be a road trip game. It just feels right to me. I mean, just look at this gameplay:

Bro-trip Fantasy XV. I'll be waiting for the "Dude, Where's my car?" DLC patiently.

you don't write things like a human being
you write an approximation of what we would like a human being to be
if characetrs were actually written like humans dialog would be full of awkward pauses, repetition, stuttering, poorly constructed sentences, you wouldn't be able to hear most of it, and it would be full of filler

And they' d have a pee bar.

Of the top of my head, the only significant woman I can think of from that time period would be Charlotte Corday. Women were indeed already pleading for more equality, but most were doing so "from their kitchen" : (no english translation available, sorry) http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femmes_sous_la_Révolution_française. Basically, they were superbly ignored.

That being said, I have just the anime for you : The Rose of Versailles.

As long as they have interesting interactions and personalities, I'm cool with it. I mean, I enjoy seeing interesting female characters as much as any other girl but if they want to write an all guy cast I'd rather them do that than throw in a girl just for the sake of throwing in a girl (and they'd probably just revert to only sex appeal anyway and THAT would piss me off more).

Hey guys? No rational person would argue that we can't connect with characters unlike ourselves physically. But any rational person or decent writer would agree that diversity never hurts <3

I'm not really interested in FFXV to start so I guess I can't weigh in properly. Having the Final Fantasy franchise in particular approach the subject of brotherhood is a novelty, so that's nice. I guess it all depends on what size lens you use. In certain contexts it's something new, but is it new enough? Could it give more? I'll let somebody more invested in this particular game figure that out.

    Not enough incoherent screaming

I agree with this, but I think SE has always been great with diversity in their casts. That's one reason I'm not on the hate train for the game. They wouldn't just make the main characters all male for no reason. Plus it's not like every single character in the game is male.

Diversity can hurt, easily. Diversity is why so many 80s cartoons are so awkward to watch. They were more focused on having a prerequisite of diversity than creating anything of quality. I'd also like to hope that no rational person would argue that someone should be forced to be diverse >.>
and hey, while I'm spamming the word diversity, I don't think I've ever heard of a road trip bromance game ever. That's pretty diverse.
I mean, yeah, one of the most important characters is Stella. Heck, the topic title here is misleading, it's not even main characters, but main playable characters

Not so much a phase as it is an ever-looming, fluid state of being

I'm with ya there. Wasn't even talking about FFXV when I said that, just generally addressing the sentiment.

Really? Diversity killed those shows? Are you sure it wasn't ham-handed writing? For counter-points, I refer you to most 90's shows: Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Lab, All That, etc., which managed roughly the same level of variety with none of the painful cringing. Physical, cultural and societal differences were subtle and seamlessly blended with the narrative, rather than halting it to call attention to themselves. It's very possible and very beneficial.

People shouldn't be under duress, but they also shouldn't be exempt from criticism. You're free to write whatever story you want, but if it treads old ground then it should be noted as such. And yes, the concept is new to gaming in particular, which I've already admitted, but like I said, this sort of thing isn't necessarily about paying a toll. It's about always striving to create something better. Fiction as a whole can evolve and push for brand-new experiences that catch everyone's eye, and contain all the grace and depth of the real world.
