For my English class (and as a graduation requirement), I have to write a research paper. It’s nothing heavy or formal, but my chosen topic is modern-day feminism. To collect some data, I thought I would ask you lovely people some questions! Now, because of the nature of the assignment and all the questions are slightly different from males to females. Please be honest and answer preferably without looking at others’ responses! You’re free to leave anything blank. Thanks a lot to those who take the time to fill it out! Girls Name: Gender: Age: Country of Residence: Race/Ethnicity: How would you define feminism? How would you describe a modern-day feminist? How do you think society views feminists? Sure I'll help out Name: Antoinette Gender: Female Age: 24 Country of Residence: England. Race/Ethnicity: White British. How would you define feminism? A woman's full rights to do as she wishes in her life within education and in work, as well as to be as good as males. How would you describe a modern-day feminist? Women who think any woman who wants to be a house wife is stupid. How do you think society views feminists? See above. Would you consider yourself a feminist? Yes, but only within how I define it. Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? Still needed.
Name: Not given. Gender: Female Age: 19 Country of Residence: United States Race/Ethnicity: Caucasian How would you define feminism? Feminism is a movement or set of ideals put forth for the liberty of a woman as an individual. Radical feminism is synonymous with individualism, and individualist anarchism by extension. It is a reaction to the sexism inherent in social structure and roles that have existed and still exist in every state-run society to date. How would you describe a modern-day feminist? I am one, so this question is not entirely fair. A modern-day feminist is the same as an olden day feminist. Taking on the name of a feminist because you are selfish does not make you a feminist any more than claiming to be an anarchist because you dislike rules makes you an anarchist. That said, I view modern-day feminists as people who believe that the individual is not held down to any kind of unspoken social contract and that individual liberty should surpasses all barriers, legal and economic. Women are seen as inferior whether they are white women, black women, Asian women, Latino women or any other ethnicity. Women are seen as inferior regardless of intelligence; a male and a female of equal intelligence are not equally valuable in society. Women are seen as inferior regardless of sexual orientation as well. Because women are viewed as having less liberty regardless of all other factors, it is a common front for individualists to take, as it is central to the lives of half of the human population. I see modern-day feminists as the realists who both see and reject this inferiority in this generation, just as others have done in the generations before them. How do you think society views feminists? It depends on how you define society. Because of the people who use the name when they are not truly concerned about liberty but are merely indignant at the way men behave, most societies view feminists as Nazis who want to take liberty away from men. Would you consider yourself a feminist? Yes. Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? There will always be a need for feminism. The problem propagates itself. Women are physically inferior to men on a whole. Because they are needed to continue a male's line, male on female rape will continue to be a part of our culture due to genetics alone. The incentive to rape may not manifest in literal rape in most cases, but it will manifest in creating an environment where women are inferior and as such can be taken advantage of far more easily than men can. A woman living alone will not do as well as a man living alone. A lesbian couple will not do as well as a gay couple or a straight couple. Women are currently better off pairing with a man than any other option in terms of social standing. A woman's incentive to submit to men is strong. Without feminism, they will functionally become property again in one or two generations. When you hear people debate about feminism or speak about it, it is predominately men who are participating in the debate. People would sooner vote someone from a racial minority into an office at any level than a woman. Why is that the case if feminism is no longer needed? Why is that the case if it has risen above racism in terms of improving? Furthermore, as Patman said, why is there a different set of questions based on the sex of those who take this survey?
Name: Patrice Gender: Male Age: 32 Country of Residence: France Race/Ethnicity: Caucasian How would you define feminism? I' d define it as an intellectual movement militating for rights equality regardless of sex or gender, and a few rights specific to woman (abortion, contraception etc ...). How would you describe a modern-day feminist? See above ? I don' t see how the "modern-day" part is relevant. How do you think society views feminists? Positively I suppose, misogynists aside (they view them as a bunch of castrating *****es/****). Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? In France, statistically (but not always), a woman earns less money for a given job than a man would. In divorce cases the juridic battles over the children tutoring are usually won by women. Homosexuals don' t have the same legal rights as heterosexuals (most notably regarding marriage). Finally, discrimination based upon sex and/or gender is not that uncommon here. Feminism is clearly still needed. Oh and btw, the fact that this has test a different set of questions for each sex for no good reason I can think of says volume on the subject at hand. It implicitly states that a man cannot be a feminist, gotta love the irony !
Name: Glen Gender: Male Age: 18 Country of Residence: Australia Race/Ethnicity: Caucasian How would you define feminism? A movement to get females treated equally. How would you describe a modern-day feminist? Someone that attempts to get women treated as equally as men. Is there much of a difference between modern day feminists and older ones? How do you think society views feminists? Some people would see it as stupid, others would support it all the way. Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? In some aspects women are treated equally, but i don't believe that they are treated equally in ALL areas.
Name:Ross Gender: Male Age:19 Country of Residence:United Kingdom Race/Ethnicity:White British How would you define feminism? Basic feminism, is to me, the idea of women's view of their equal rights in society. How would you describe a modern-day feminist? An everyday woman, to be honest. Most women have some degree of feminism in them, sometimes more extreme whilst others are more liberal, a typical feminist I suppose would be a woman aware of the injustice against her sex, and would be willing to act on it. How do you think society views feminists? Mixed, for women they are supportive on a majority of things. For men, it's just another complaint that women have over men. In society they have to be respected, but that doesn't mean every institute agrees or follows said rules of conduct. But that's the same for race, religion, etc. Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? I feel on the whole, from my experience, that women are treated equally in terms of law, society and in the workplace. By different groups and individuals it is varied, some see them as the same whilst others obviously do not. It is not usually common for me to find people who see them as less, Indeed, the only ones who do are usually horny makes, but they are few and far between, I still see plenty of respect for women as equals to men. Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? Feminism should be more of a reminder that equality should be kept in check.
To tell the truth I was considering adding the question for both, but my chosen subject is young women & feminism, not men. Not saying the bros can't have their feminist fun, but it's not within my scope of research. :]
Why include men if it's a study on women? Your population sample would be invalid if that's part of your hypothesis as well. I mean, if it's not going towards any results, are we filling it out for any important reason?
Well I also have to bring up counter-points etc, so if a large number of males were saying that feminism is no longer needed/has no place in our society, that would be significant.
Name: Jesse Gender: Male Age: 17 Country of Residence: United States Race/Ethnicity: Mexican How would you define feminism? As the desire for women to have equal rights as men. How would you describe a modern-day feminist? As someone with the desire for women to have more rights than men. I say this because at this point women are equal to men and in many cases, women have it much better than men do. I do not see what women could possibly be fighting for at this point, other than making it easier to trample over men. How do you think society views feminists? As freedom fighters and amazing people. Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? I feel that women having equal rights to men should be enforced, but I disagree with the way they can ruin a man's life for no reason (See: Divorce laws), and I do not believe that at this point there is anything to fight for. Women are treated fine. There is no more "Plight of the woman" in the US.
Name: I'd rather not say Gender: Male Age: 22 Country of Residence: United States Race/Ethnicity: Asian How would you define feminism? A movement to get equal rights for women How would you describe a modern-day feminist? As just everyday people who would do something about it if they noticed inequality How do you think society views feminists? I honestly have no idea Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? For the most part, I would say no because I do think that women are treated equally in most places (and even get special treatment quite a lot as well). Of course there are still some issues, because I've heard that women are less likely to earn the same wages as men.
Name: Mish :3 Gender: Female Age: 22 Country of Residence: England Race/Ethnicity: White British How would you define feminism? A movement based on the ideology that women should be equal with men, socially, politically and so on. How would you describe a modern-day feminist? Someone who believes the above. How do you think society views feminists? Man-hating feminazis, mostly. Would you consider yourself a feminist? Yes. In that I believe in equality for women. I wouldn't announce myself as one though in casual conversation as I would rather not have the label or the stigma that some might associate with feminism. Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? I do believe that there is a need for it. I believe that there is still a divide between the sexes and people still need to be educated on the subject of sexism.
I'll help, =) Name: Username: Flowergothic/ Real 1st name: Julia Gender: Female Age: 15 Country of Residence: United States Race/Ethnicity: White How would you define feminism? Women's equal rights movement How would you describe a modern-day feminist? An equal gender rights believer How do you think society views feminists? I dunno. Probably rebel women trying to get equal rights. Would you consider yourself a feminist? Kinda. I do believe in equal gender rights, but I'm not Feminsit-crazy. Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? I kinda have the feeling that women are treated equally today, so there isn't really any need for it.
Name: Chris Gender: Male Age: 19 Country of Residence: UK Race/Ethnicity: White British How would you define feminism? As the desire for equal rights between women and men and a Feminist is an activist who partakes in this be it in belief alone, protests, etc. How would you describe a modern-day feminist? A person who believes in equal rights for men and women and actively objects to/challenges any sexist/unequal acts that occur to them or that they witness. How do you think society views feminists? Likely in a negative fashion and the stereotyped butch lesbian man hating "****s". They likely assume they just hate men and are moaning for something they'll never get. I'd base that on the futile attitude I've seen around me regarding equal rights. Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? Women are not totally treated equally, in the industry I work in they are looked down upon by customers even if they are the managers in shops. They can be treated as sexual objects and/or stupid at their job compared to men. I recall a difficult customer arguing with the manageress and then turning to me asking me to fix his issue because I clearly knew more than she did regarding sports (which was not true). In general society we have come leaps and bounds from 100 years ago but it's still an ongoing battle and it may never be over but it still has to be fought and constantly pursued to keep gaining equal rights, equal treatment and changing expectations and stereotypes of what women are.
I'd be happy to help c: I've done tons of papers like this @_@; Name: Dannie Gender: Female Age: 23 Country of Residence: USA Race/Ethnicity: White How would you define feminism? A movement that focuses on advocating for the rights of women How would you describe a modern-day feminist? I feel that modern-day feminists primarily focus on the sexual rights of women, such as orientation, contraception, trafficking, etc. How do you think society views feminists? I think society has a great misconception of feminists, many probably think of them as "whackos" and people who are taking things way too far. I don't think many of them thinking about the fact that if feminism hadn't come about then women would not be allowed to vote, use contraception, or even get a quality education. Would you consider yourself a feminist? Slightly, I believe that the rights of women should be fought for but I believe there are greater issues at hand that need to be focused on. Do you think there is still a need for feminism in today’s day and age, or do you feel women are treated equally? Women are certainly treated much better now then they have been in the past. I believe that feminists movements in places outside of the States would be greatly beneficial.
While I disagree about anonymity and hold that there is nothing wrong with it in the least, I think this is relevant regarding the need for feminism in the modern day. Source: http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/internet/2012/06/dear-internet-why-you-cant-have-anything-nice
Definitely an interesting read, thanks Makaze. ;o My paper has been written and handed in, though, so thank you all for taking the time to answer these questions! Your responses definitely helped, and even though I didn't include as much as I would have liked (wrote it the day before it was due oops v:), they were at the very least interesting to read!
