I've been talking about video games with @libregkd on Skype, and I asked if he had any favorite genres. He doesn't really have any, but do you guys have any? I personally like puzzlers, platformers, and RPGs. Puzzlers: They just have a nice challenge. Platformers: They can be surprising. For example, you can encounter rooms with invisible floors, and in some games you neither get tools to show you invisible stuff or objects on the invisible floor to give you a general outline of where the floor is. RPGs: I just like how you have to use strategies, though there are some games where the strategy isn't as important or even necessary at all.
JRPGs: They usually have amazing stories and characters that you can really invest in. I know out of the ones that I've played, they are incredibly relatable. They really draw you in and invoke emotion because you actually care about them (I'm a sucker for JRPGs with sad/tragic stories). Also all of the different kinds of awesome battle systems they have. I love traditional turn-based, but also the more action-oriented wherein you can move around freely and attack as you please. It's also just helluva fun leveling up and gaining new skills/spells/whatever. Fighting: It's good seeing just how much they have evolved these days - a wealth of different game modes, some even including a lengthy story campaign (inb4 playing fighters for story, SCREW YOU I LIKE IT), challenges, online lobbies, character customisation... I do still like the old school 1-on-1 straight up fighting, but more content and things to do is always a plus. I'm more into fast-paced 2D anime style fighters as there's just so much more flashy, OTT stuff you can implement than what you usually see in 3D fighters.
Can I take the cheap way out and say third person action games? ...I'm gonna, even if that's not a genre but a collection of them. Listen, I know that is incredibly nondescript, but hear me out... I enjoy playing Beat 'Em Ups, Hack N' Slashes, and Character Action Games all the same. I just love them. Like, I'm playing Remember Me right now. Good game, bad beat 'em up... but I'm having a good time because I love the genre so much. Games like that are all about mastering the playstyle of your character and using that do SMOKIN' SICK STYLIN' stuff. Games like that I feel take A LOT to master, but when you do, you hit a skill ceiling you thought you'd never reach.
Survival Horror Silent Hill 2/3, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, SCP Containment Breach, Condemned: Criminal Origins Character Action Devil May Cry 3/4, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Ninja Gaiden Black Fighting Ultimate Marvel Vs. I wouldn't say I have a favorite genre tbh. There are many great games across different genres, so I don't really stick to one. The only ones I would say that I don't like are sports and racing games, because they tend to bore me after playing them for 10 minutes.
