Fast Food Madness: The Epic Return V2

Sora pulled back from the kiss and returned to his previous position on his knees, his eyes going down to the ground as he sat in the quiet room for several minutes. Hearing Kairi's even breathing, he knew that she was asleep. However, he waited a few more minutes before he got up and took care of the things he had to do.

 

Kairi lay on her side, one arm still tucked under the pillow while the other hand rested near her chin. Nothing but blackness greeted her in her sleep, the girl resting peacefully.

 

A few hours later...

Sora sat by Kairi's bed, his back against it and his head resting on the mattress behind him. He had been there for a while, after he completed two sandwiches and made his phone call to Riku. He was fine sitting in the silence, even if it did make him think about a lot of things he would have rather left alone.

 

Kairi continued to sleep, though it hadn't been a dreamless rest. Over the course of her rest, what seemed like sparkles were noticed, triggering her to believe it was a dream. They floated by, leaving streams of warm colors behind them in the blackness of her mind. But it was peaceful, which didn't cause any subconcious reaction out of Kairi.

 

Sora shut his eyes, exhaling a soft breath as he sat there. As lighthearted as he had been with Kairi, he wasn't feeling that way anymore. He felt serious, and...dark. He didn't like the mood swing; he would do anything right now to be the person that he used to be. Why was it so hard to be lighthearted these days?

 

As Kairi slept on, the shiny orbs continued to float by in her dream, as if she were standing there watching. But eventually they grew more in numbers, swirling around the blackness of Kairi's dream, trails of dust in different colors falling behind them. As this happened, Kairi felt warmth in her heart. It was a comforting sensation, which brought a faint smile to her lips.

 

Sora didn't have an answer to that question, or any of the ones that had haunted him for the past few hours. He could only pin the change on his new personality, where he was more serious and mature. He never realized it before, just how lighthearted he was. Now that he saw it, he would do anything to get back that lighter personality. Unfortunately, he knew that no matter what he did, he could never get it back. Never.

 

Eventually, the glowing orbs were more abundant and their colors filled the blackness in Kairi's mind. Instead of darkness, everything was mixing together and seeming to form a bright light. Kairi knew as that light grew, that she was waking up.

 

The only thing that Sora could hope for now was that his personality didn't affect those around him too much. He always tried to be lighter around his friends, but it was harder when he was alone. If he thought he could keep up this rouse forever, then he really was lying to himself. As Smith had put it, lying to yourself showed the ultimate weakness. Sora didn't know if he agreed completely about it being the greatest weakness, but it was weakness no matter what.

 

Kairi took in a soft breath, her head burying into the pillow a little more as she started to gain her senses. It was quiet around her, and she was comfortable. Her heart felt warm, but that sensation started to fade as the smile on her lips disappeared. Even though she was only waking up, something didn't seem right.

 

Sora took in a soft breath, his eyes staying shut as he let his thoughts continue. He knew that he shouldn't have let Smith's words get to him, but he couldn't help it; he had struck a nerve. He had said a lot of awful things, and unfortunately, most of them were true, especially concerning what he said about Sora.

 

After another intake of breath, Kairi opened her eyes a little, seeing the wall of her room in front of her. But on the side of the bed she also saw something brown. She closed her eyes again and opened them fully this time, able to recognize the spikes and register that Sora was in her room with her. She was comforted by his presence, but at the same time something felt...off.

 

But Sora wasn't going to think about all that now. He had done enough of that lately, and now all that he wanted was peace of mind. He exhaled a quiet breath, turning his head against the side of the mattress. Sleep would have also been nice; he felt strangely tired, probably because when Smith was still around, he had been sleep deprived. He supposed that he probably didn't catch up on all his sleep yet.

 

Due to his movement, Kairi was able to see a little bit of Sora's face now. She noticed that his eyes were closed. Was he sleeping? She wasn't sure, so she simply gazed at him in silence, not wanting to disturb him if that was the case.

 

But, of course, sleep alluded Sora since his mind wasn't at peace. He opened his eyes partway and looked down at the ground, the room silent around him. He would just sit there for a while longer; he had no other place to go, really. Riku didn't need him at home, and he wasn't sure if Kairi needed him here or not. Where did he belong?

 

Kairi remembered how it had been before she fell asleep--peaceful and comfortable. But now, something felt off. It was like there was a darker undertone behind everything else. She continued to look at Sora, wondering if this new feeling was coming from him... Kairi lifted her hand that wasn't under the pillow, lightly beginning to play with one of Sora's spikes.

 

Sora opened his eyes fully, feeling a touch that was familiar and strange at the same time. He turned his head in the other direction, seeing Kairi awake. He wondered how long she had been awake, though judging by the slight grogginess he saw in her eyes, he figured that it hadn't been very long.

 

Kairi met Sora's eyes instantly, a soft smile falling on her lips as she moved her hand. She let her fingers run through his hair from where she lay. "Hi," she greeted quietly.

 

"Hey," Sora said softly, a faint smile appearing on his lips when he saw Kairi's. Her playing with his hair also made him feel little lighter, like he wasn't quite as alone as he had been feeling before. It was bad to feel that way when Kairi was only a foot or two away, but that was how he had been feeling when she was asleep and he was alone in his thoughts.

 

Kairi's smile grew slightly, though she thought she noticed something different in Sora's eyes. However, she pushed the thought away, not wanting to confront something of the sort right now. "You didn't sit here the whole time, did you?" she asked, her action with his hair stopping as she furrowed her eyebrows in concern, smile dimming. If he sat here for the last few hours, she would be upset; Sora didn't have to sit with her this whole time...
