"A Nigerian who may have links to al-Qaeda, while on a flight from Nigeria to Detroit (which had a stopover in the Netherlands), attempted to detonate a chemical explosive device. It failed, although it did catch his groin on fire. Passengers said that it sounded like a firecracker. A passenger tackled the terrorist and suffered burns. Other than the terrorist and said tackler, there were no injuries. The perpetrator, one Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalab, has been taken into custody. "

Not only did his attack fail, but he caught his balls on fire.

Not to mention the location. Come on, Detroit? What was he trying to accomplish?

...I'm... not sure what to say to this. Is this seriously legit?

This is about as sad a story as that of Achmed the Dead Terrorist, and that's fake.

I'm just glad the idiot failed and the detonator was wrong. Apparently the same man who encouraged the guy to do killings at the Texas military base is also behind encouraging this man to do his deed on the plane. Heard he burnt his nads so maybe now that he doesn't have any nads to get his virgins with when he dies, he'll talk. People that go after civilians like this suck. Glad that another passenger tackled him and stopped things from progressing. People are standing up to these terrorist attacks and though they get hurt, I am glad to see we do. I would as well. These people need to be shown we aren't going to just lay down and accept their jihad stuff anymore.

We are fortunate the detonator failed though and I do not get why this man was not blacklisted from flying in the first place. He was on a terrorist watch list. Of course, people slip through the cracks or there is only so much we can do legally but it almost ended in disaster. Just happy it did not and maybe we can start getting some answers to get after these people better.

I've found it strange how many terrorist attacks have failed in the years after 9/11.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, by any means. When the London bombing attacks occured, the same day my best friend was nowhere at school, he rarely took days off so I was a little anxious when I heard the news, since the bus route was the same one that was attacked, I beleive. I worried like hell, but thank god he was fine.

But anyway, either the anti-terrorist units are working with peak effeciency, great skill and just a bit of luck... or something else, that I just don't find right...
I guess it's the paranoia kicking in. Still it makes me wonder.

It's good it failed. And what's with these people tackling terrorists? It's like Glasgow airport all over again!

Well, thank god the detonator failed and nothing did happen, but I wonder what's going to happen now that people have discovered there's a crack in the system that this guy managed to slip through.

Also...why Detroit? Putting the car industry out of its misery? I don't get it.

I am assuming Detroit is a large enough city and close enough to the border to cause controversy in both the United States and Canada. An attack on cities such as New York or even Los Angeles would have been more expected than an attack on Detroit.

Ah. Didn't think of that. That makes sense: an attack on L.A would be predictable, and they've already had one on New York.

Of course, this now reminds me: there's a tanker headed from Yemen (where the failed bomber hails from) to Boston (about 45 mins. from me) that should arrive sometime in February. There's already talk of trying to stop the tanker or try to raise security standards before it lands.

    It only takes one person.

Gain the right materials that chemically react violently enough, you've got a weapon to kill.
Put the person into the mindset of retribution, glory or personnal gain from their actions, you have the motive to kill.
Train the m with skills and talents to stay concealed in the company of hundreds of people, you have the opportunity to kill.

It's easy enough to make destruction occur. It's just harder to prevent it from happening though. These terrorist groups won't be known in world history as heroes. But monsters and fanatic killers.

If they believe they can win, they are wrong.

It just makes me sad to even read something like this.
I'm so glad the idiot was tackled before anything happened serious.

I would call the action of attempting to stop a tanker as such simply because it hails from the country where the attempted bomber was from a bit hasty, but dear god I am sure we do not wish for a repeat of the Halifax Explosion, in a city such as Boston no less.
