In that case, why not just cripple online play? It's too legally ambiguous to start destroying the consoles. Also, someone would soon come up with a patch of sorts, to get around the bricking. Apply it to the PS3 before it can connect, and it'll work.

Besides, I was under the impression that this exploit just allowed users to sign their own code. That's not the same as jailbreaking. It's making user-made content appear official. They couldn't easily detect that.

Got some news for you peeps. Sony has won a restraining order that stops a hacker spreading word about ways to play pirated games on the PS3.

And also what they did for the PS3 consoles:

    Let's see what happens next.

It's good news that Sony won that court order but they'll need to do more than that to stop people hacking. I still think, if they could, bring down these hacked ps3's. It'll make many in the community happier.

It'll also irritate many in the community.

Disabling consoles from going online is fair game. Bricking consoles is not.

They should've thought of that before they began ruining games for others.

Yet, as Magick pointed out, hackers can make cheating programs so they won't work online. Therefore, everything in terms of online is likely to stay fair.

You're judging the entire scene by the worst users. That's not really fair.

Firmware 3.56 added a rootkit to the PS3. This is a program sony controls that allows them to implement new security checks without the need to send the new security checks in a new firmware update. When you sign online, your PS3 will now be running remote sony code. This will simply stall the illegal online gaming/cheating. Also, with this, Sony can now peek at everything on your PS3. From video files, music, system files, etc.

Some people are pissed at the privacy invasion lol.

Oh well, I'll just wait for them to decrypt 3.56 and remove it.

Now watch as more people flock to the homebrew scene to get Sony's spyware out of their PS3s. In turn, Sony will try harder to get rid of hackers, taking more drastic measures. It's an endless loop, which only aids the scene.

Seeing that many people misunderstand or only know half the truth, leading to false thoughts, below is an attempt to give you the full idea of what the guy has in mind, and I can only give you his side of the story because Sony does not share anything in public (do they have anything more anyways?)

I don't really agree on this boycott thing.
In Geohot, it is further explained his purposes and claims:
The message from KaKaRoTo is this one below. It is the quote of how it was posted in ps3mfw:
With those being said, here is a last post from Geohot's blog:

There are more of his posts in there.

Hope this cleared some things up. I am sure that if 100 people read this, only 1 will change his mind, humans are such selfish beings that they can make up anything to support their thoughts. Of course, that doesn't make their opinion wrong. I don't agree with anything the guy said or claims too. Anyone has the right to have his own opinion, but please take the time to think about it a little, and instead of trying to find reasons to accuse the other side, try to find reasons to defend it.
That's democracy after all right? I vertically disagree with your opinion but I will do anything to defend it.

Doesn't change my opinion. Online games have been affected by this, ruining it for gamers. Obviously it's not him doing it but it's the effect of his actions. He never thought about those who would suffer negative effects from releasing that code.

I'm fine if Sony ban them from psn but I ain't supporting this guy.

Geohotz gave people free will. What they choose to do is not Geohotz' fault, it's theirs. Pin your blame on the right people.

While he is involved in the chain of causality, it's no more fair to blame him than it is to blame the hackers' parents for giving birth to the hackers.

Of course I blame the hackers, but he is also responsible. You can't deny that. He should've thought about the repercussions on the PS3 online community before he went and ticked off Sony and millions of PS3 users.

He has no responsibility for other people's actions. He intended to give people control of their systems back, including a feature Sony removed (booting Linux). Other people chose to abuse that. He himself did nothing what-so-ever.

Or are you suggesting he shouldn't have given people access to their own systems, or homebrew, for fear of what others may create and do in his footsteps?
