PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March. Managing the site has become too stressful.

“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”

Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.

“After March 15th the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.”

Zuckerberg said that the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult, but that he does not think people will be upset.

“I personally don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said in a private phone interview. “And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good thing.”

Some Facebook users were furious upon hearing the shocking news.

“What am I going to do without Facebook?” said Denise Bradshaw, a high school student from Indiana. “My life revolves around it. I’m on Facebook at least 10 hours a day. Now what am I going to do with all that free time?”

However, parents across the country have been experiencing a long anticipated sense of relief.

“I’m glad the Facebook nightmare is over,” said Jon Guttari, a single parent from Detroit. “Now my teenager’s face won’t be glued to a computer screen all day. Maybe I can even have a conversation with her.”

Those in the financial circuit are criticizing Zuckerberg for walking away from a multibillion dollar franchise. Facebook is currently ranked as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists estimating its value at around 7.9 billion.

But Zuckerberg remains unruffled by these accusations. He says he will stand by his decision to give Facebook the axe.

“I don’t care about the money,” said Zuckerberg. “I just want my old life back.”

The Facebook Corporation suggests that users remove all of their personal information from the website before March 15th. After that date, all photos, notes, links, and videos will be permanently erased.

True or not, the fact that people are freaking out about this is pretty hilarious.

I don't see it happening. Facebook is a moneypit for the creator. It's not logical to end something that is making you that much money.

Also, the article itself is not very professional.
Oh it's from Weekly World News. That explains it.

I was going "eehhhhhhhhh", until I got to this part:
    lolololololololololololol

I mean seriously, if it became too stressful, he would hand it over to someone else, not shut it down completely.

Well, hopefully we can all agree that this a pretty obvious hoax, for the reasons stated above. However, I think it's silly how Facebook hasn't confirmed or dismissed it, and is taking their sweet time letting this all linger and marinate. I would personally find it pretty funny if it did shut down. I don't know, it might be nice to see my mom making dinner not on CafeWorld.

Why hopefully? You want it to remain in the web?

Not so much that as just hoping no one (in this thread at least) will try to argue that it's the complete truth. Though at first I was a little unsure of what I thought, it kinda screams hoax now after reading more on it, and having an actual discussion about it. c:

Sounds like something I'd read on The Onion.

By the way, if there are still people who don't get it, consider this: Facebook is worth billions. He could sell it at a fraction of its true value, and he's still be set up for him and his family to live comfortably for multiple lifetimes.

If this were true, I reckon I would have heard about it before now, plus no one is stupid enough to just get rid of something worth as much as Facebook, you would sell it if you didn't want it.

However, if this is true and he really doesn't care about the money then that is sad, I mean, I don't spend hours on it, I just really enjoy tagging people in photos and talking to old friends that I don't get a chance to talk to that often. Without it, I'll lose that connection which will be devastating for me.

I don't see how it is, I would prefer it that way really. The owner of a website not caring about the money in it just tells me that they're not going to start limiting your account unless you buy a paid account, begging you for donations (coughcoughWikipedia), shoving ads all over the place, etc.

Even if this were true, it wouldn't bother me that much.
About a quarter of my friends on FB are family members, so I could always cal/visit them whenever.
The 6-7 khv friends I can just talk to on MSN/here.
And I have the email/phone numbers of the friends I talk to a lot.

    As for the other 100+
...I either don't talk to them or have no idea who the **** they are. |:

If Facebook were to end, I'd be irritated, simply because it's my link to a few people, and it'd be a pain to have to try to get new ways to contact them.

What I meant is, it'll be sad that facebook disappears when it's been a large part of today's society

Fanfiction.net too... Dear God, I can't get a second's peace now on that frigging website. *to Misty's comment*

About Zuckerburg, if he is closing it, he might have the attitude: "If I can't have it, no one can." He can also most likely retire comfortably and have his children's children never work off the money he made. He sounds like an ego case of all ego cases from what I heard about him.

I don't use Facebook and am strongly against it, so I really don't care.

I didn't think this could be true, and RvR's post shows it. No way would a guy just "choose" to shut down a multi-billion dollar website at random. If he was tired of it, he'd pass it off to someone else.

Although it was kind of funny to hear my 50-year old mom start whining about how she just got some uber-rare horse in Farmville and complain that now she'll never get both of her accounts past level 100.

Ha, knew it was fake, but thus is why I don't use facebook anymore. It will destroy you!!!!! :P

And I totally agree Facebook is too popular to shut down, think of all the people who sign on every...25 minutes or so (used to be me btw xD)

Farmville is independent of Facebook, isn't it? So it could continue on along. It's be easy enough to port it to another social network.

This is in the hypothetical situation of Facebook ever closing. Which it probably won't.
