So I understand the need to proof read and so on. But this whole 'you could've explored this concept and theme more' is arguably stupid. I was like ten words from the word limit. How the bloody hell can I do this stuff with these restrictions?!
Yeah, it's a giant pain. Some teachers allow you to go over the world limit slightly if necessary, but that's usually why they want you to use bigger words and such so you can say what you mean. Also, a lot of people try to keep you from using "to be" verbs, which is a giant pain, but doable.
maybe be more economic with your words, cut out things that don't contribute solely to a sufficient explanation. i.e. the exact opposite of bullshitting. i have a tendency to be too wordy on some of my papers so it's something i've been practicing this year. granted i have no idea what you're talking about so
I think I had that problem, too. When I did my research paper on school buses for DigiTools when I was a junior, I got a "long" comment because it was a few pages. Here's an essay I did in Senior English. What do you think, too long? I removed my last name and my teacher's full last name on this post for privacy reasons, obviously. :p
I hate dealing with restrictions on essays, but I've found that trying to cut it down to the bare minimum is really helpful. Take out unnecessary phrases and try not to repeat yourself unless you absolutely have to. If you go back and re-read it, I'm sure you'll be able to find things you can cut.
I know, I know, I tried. That is all sound advice. I always try to be economical. I'm still trying to abide by the rules of writing, economy, clarity, and so on even in essays and articles so on. Looking back, I think I focused a lot on one text compared to the other. 1300 on Pudd'nhead Wilson and 700 on Souls of Black Folk, hmm... also the intro was 300 or so words, too much for this sort of length essay. Still, reading back I don't know what i could've cut away. Happy with the score so maybe I should stop complaining.
Pffft, word caps are so restrictive. And not a restriction I enjoy. And yet I have a Twitter for some reason.
Well, then you might just have a teacher that's a complete pain about the papers and they either expect too much, or they just want to see how much you can managed with such an impossible restriction.
Exactly this. "Explore this more" is basically teachers' weapon against bullshitting. Granted that hardly explores the reasons WHY most students resort to bullshitting, but it is what it is. I love word caps :'D They force me to write concisely and pick the best words.
