oh, wow! thats awesome!~ how do you do the checkered backround?

 

Edit > Copy Visible, Edit > Paste. Filters > Blur > Pixelize (10x10), then Filters > Enhance > Sharpen (80). Then set that to Overlay and erase the parts you don't want with a soft brush. That's how you do it on GIMP.
