    Generalisation achieved.

There isn't really a good reason to belong to any subculture whatsoever. If you want to be yourself you'd be "John", not "John the emo", or "John the punk" or "John the macho" or whatever. Admitting to belong to a certain subculture is abiding to the rules of that subculture which (indirectly or not) induces the so-called "cattle" mentality.

I am Styx and I don't belong to any subculture. I am myself and I believe in a so-called "buffet of beliefs" where anyone can choose his/her own sense of justice and style of living without swearing allegiance to anything. ;)

I agree completely. I am quite inclined towards being goth, and I remember mentioning it to someone briefly a school. They didn't believe me, and I didn't really think much of it. I dyed my hair black, I wear little else but black, and I often have chain Jewelry and such. Next thing I know, everyone at school is calling me an emo. I do listen to bands like MCR and Bullet for Valentine occasionly, but I don't really class them as emo, for reasons already stated numerous times. Yet when people get to know me, I've actually got quite a positive outlook on life- I just think that in order to fully appreciate the good times, you have to remember the darker side. I don't lash out at people who call me emo though- I just ignore them utterly. Most of the people who tell me that at my school don't have enough brain cells to form a coherent sentence that isn't an insult, so it doesn't bother me much what they think.

Wow, I waffle for a long time. Am I boring you guys?

Emo is a type of music genre but somehow, someone out their decided to make it a style. Though there is no reason for anyone to cause harm to themselves at all. Usually, not all the time, emos try to stand out and get attention all the time. They do it by wearing skin tight jeans and those band t-shirts they bought at Hot Topic. Some apparently cut themselves and the ones who don't are label as 'scene'.

I don't really care much about 'emo people' and like last year I was slightly considered one but I usually got weird looks from others and no one respected me, so I was like screw this, this isn't who I am and I went back to a new way of dressing. Just I never cut myself.

That video was stereotyping but they were talking about emos in general. Besides all that video is probably just to make sure the parents are doing their job and their kids don't turn out to be wrecks.

There is nothing wrong with emo people or music. They just do what they do best and I don't find anything wrong with that. Can't people just live the way they want w/o other people looking down on them?

    I didn't mean in a stereotype way.
I meant;if you want me to spell it out for you: without jumping to conclusions...
If there was someone who should be part of this emo shit;it would be him.
    Stereotype copy example:
I am Haley.I am Preppy,I love clothes.I like rock, pop, classical, dance and punk music.I love my friends.I am very social, and bold.I am in the student council and honor society.I love the jonas brothers.I am not a hater.
I live for my family.Christmas is my favorite holiday. My favorite candy is twizzlers.I would do anything for a friend.I am loyal and nice.
I would be classified as preppy, girl clique, good girl,smart..but yet if you mess with me I would punch you in the face. (:^^^^^^^^^^^^That's a stereotype. But, come on, we all fit into groups, just remember...Cliques never end.Emo might fade out but classifying people into groups won't.Even when you are a Grandmother. It's the truth ask your parents. So if you are annoyed with the word emo or stereotypes...you'll just have to get used to it.

I do see some truth to what you're saying.
Like me, I like to say I defy stereotypes. However, someone's always gonna be asking 'So, what do you classify yourself as?' If I tell them what I've just said, they'll say "But everyone has to be something."
The only reason I decided to give myself a stereotype is because I can't stand being called emo, but I still want to dress how I like.
I mean, people see the way I act and ask me why I'm not a prep. I tell them its because that just isn't me. I like vampires, graveyards, roaming around town at night... I like blue lipstick and thick eyeliner, I like corsets and Doc Martins! But the way I dress and what I like shouldn't affect my personality... I love the look on peoples faces when weird goth girl comes walking down the hallways and gives them a hug and starts talking about bunnies with them, it's just so much fun. Stereotypes are overrated, and I mean... if I get annoyed being called emo when I'm not, I don't even wanna know how bad actual emos must feel. It's like being looked down on.
Emos aren't gonna stop being depressed if you just kick them when they're down... I don't understand life.

Really, the only place where stereotypes aren't gonna matter to any body, where we can all get along-- is in Heaven.

I agree!! MCR is the farthest thing from emo there is!! Just go to YouTube and search "Why My Chemical Romance is not emo" and you'll get some pretty good videos with very plausable points. I can't believe that made that report! Gerard must feel awful! He hates having MCR assotiated with "emo."

Ok first off lets start with the fact that most people dont even know that emo used to be a genre...... and then all the sudden it became a trend taking kids in by the thousands.... so to even get upset about the news calling MCR emo is a little silly casue if you take it back to just the genre then yes they are VERY emo... and if your looking at it that way then all these kids claiming to BE emo are the stupid ones because how can you be a genre? You might as well start saying things like.. i'm rap and i'm alternative, i'm death metal... these are all along the same lines.

Emotional lyrics don't make a band fit the stereotype 'emo' today. Emo now consists of poetry, cutting, wearing black and depressing music. If I wanted to, i could say about 99% are emo. Going by the original term, EMO is EMOtional. Songs are writting to convey emotion.

As for anyone who thinks MCR is emo, as in stereotype emo, heres a little quote from Gerrard Way in an interview

    “I think emo’s a pile of ****,†said Way. “I think emo is ****ing garbage – it’s bullshit.

“I think there are bands that we get lumped in with that are considered emo and, by default, that starts to make us emo. All I can say is that anyone actually listening to the records, putting the records next to each other and listening to them, [would know there are] actually no similarities.â€

Now, all of that came out in the wrong order, but what the hell.

*sigh* This is why I sometimes hate the news...

Look, EMO is a music genre from like the 70's okay, And now it turned into all this bullcrap abut cutting themselves and whatnot. WICCA'S do he cutting and self mutialation for blood sarcafice (which is kinda werid...but meh) Basically all the "EMO" kids are just melting a few subcultures into one for themselves.

Kids call me EMO at school because of the poems I write, which is not true at all, they just put me into that sterotype because they see emos as "People who cut themselves and cry alot." Which is some of the subjects are adressed in my poems *I get these idea's from friends exp. like one who used to cut herself O---O*

So no, I dont like the newscast about this at all, and they have SHOULD of studied it more deeply then this.
