Gay is for males and lesbian is for females, and both stem from homosexuality, which can be used for both genders.

 

Except a lot of lesbians refer to themselves as 'gay'.

There is just so much wrong with your first statement...

As explained, gay is simply not for males only. It's another way to say homosexual. While lesbian IS female associated, gay can be used for both, and it is. Miss Ellen Page, bless her soul for she has earned my respect, was kind enough to demonstrate when she came out.

 

Remember, we're still in a world that prosecutes homosexuality as a crime. Even the legalised countires still have bigoted views and rules on place about it.
