I've seen both Elfen Lied and Higurashi, both are very good in their own ways. I wouldn't say that one is better than the other really as I like them both a lot.

Higurashi is a bit of a mind**** if you aren't paying attention, I can't remember what episode it is when it all kicks off, but I don't think you are too far off (unless you are watching Kai which is a lot less gory).

I can't think of other gory ones atm, there are tons but my mind is dead. Claymore is pretty bloody (and also ****awesome).

Why does it have to be bloody to be good? I mean, I have nothing against bloody anime -- Higurashi is my favorite anime of all time -- but you'll have a much easier time finding something good if you're not just looking for gore.
Also the blood should kick in at episode four, with the end of the first arc. It gets progressively worse as the show goes on (*cough*Meakashi-hen*cough*), and generally Higurashi isn't as gory as it is creepy, but you should be seeing some bloodshed soon, at any rate.

Off the top of my head -- School Days, Death Note (Sort of), Narutaru, and of course Hellsing like you've mentioned. Hell Girl is also supposedly horror although I don't think it's all that gory.

Uhhg. Higurashi i hear is disgustingly gory, yet Elfen Leid is just....disgusting.
Only the last episode of Death Note is bloody, or at least that's what my friend told me.
I honestly don't care for those anime....

Higurashi is gory to be sure, but there's a complex story behind it. You could say nothing happens without reason... But you don't really delve into that until the much less disturbing second season, which explains everything and provides more drama and less violence than the first. It's unfortunate, then, that it takes so long to reach that point because a lot of people will already have dropped the show.
In any case -- I'm assuming you haven't seen Death Note, either? Your friend is right, only the last episode is really bloody, but the main character is... Twisted. It's important to drive the plot forward, though.
I can't speak for Elfen Lied because I haven't seen it. =P I can take blood and gore fine but I'm not big on nudity, you could say.

    I know what you mean.

I've only seen maybe half the first Higurashi episode, then realized i didn't want to go any further......

Death Note, I've seen maybe one scene. I honestly think the plot is dumb.

Higurashi has a much better story, but many people think that little kids with knives and teens beating little kids is sick and shouldn't be allowed in the U.S.
