You're missing one of the definitions of effect. Specifically effect as a verb instead of a noun.

 

That's something we went over in either Junior English or Senior English and how to tell when it's what, and, while I don't personally know how, your sentence would still be wrong. Affected would be correct.

 

Affected would also be correct. I just contest that it effected is not wrong.

Well, that's confusing.

In a case like that, I'd just always use "affect," because then I know I wouldn't be wrong.
