Okay I wanted to post this as of yesterday! My friend and I went to the movies and when he saw me he goes, "Dude that shirts gay!" And I just stared at him and said, "Yes I often find my shirt engaging in sexual activities with my other shirts." And he just stared at me!
But thats beside the point, that is just an example. Why do you think people use that word as an insult?

Because most people hate the thought of gay people, so when they see something that they hate, they call it 'gay.'

The word gay, as with many other words, I think have gained many different meanings. Gay, for example, has the old meaning of being happy. It can also mean homosexual and is used as a general insult that tends to have nothing to do with the objects sexual orientation.

as the ppl said b4 me, the word Gay is taken in many different forms and it is only to the other person to understand the meaning depending on the time and situation.

Also, if you answer like that to a person who called something Gay, makes you sound Gay... lol. Meaning that you are too geeky and don't know the meaning of the offensive meaning of the insult.

If someone calls you Gay and does back his/her statement up (Ex: you're gay cuz you hang out with gay men) then that's not the offensive, but the sexuality term.
(which at times, men will take that also like an insult lol)

It all comes down to what do think of the term and what situation it's being used.
So don't just blabbler out a "sexist" answer to a multi-definition word like you did.

    (man... that's long...lol)
    Peace Out!

I think I've posted this somewhere before but I'll repeat for relevance.

It used to be commonplace to hear from someone "That's rather queer" which translates to "That's rather strange/different."

Now since Homosexuals are different than the accepted norm, the phrase "That's rather queer." took on another meaning.

It's rather easy to see how the modern phrase of 'Dude, that's gay.' came about.

But c'mon who uses the word 'Dude' anymore?

Dude, I use dude. Alot of other pplez do. But that isn't the point.

Well, IMHO I think people say it because majority of the people do not like "gay people" or such, and do not wish to be one of them. So if they say "your **** is freakin gay" It's just like it doesn't look good or something more of a negative side toward you =\

Lots of people. D: Myself included.

Anyways, I say that things are 'gay' all the time, but I hardly ever mean it in the homosexual sense. It's just what happens, meanings of words change. For example, I also say things are 'lame'. Am I referring to a disability? No. :]

I can usually tell when someone says 'that's so gay!' in a rotten way. The word gay seems to be losing or has lost the 'happy' connotation and instead now means more 'queer' which is odd or peculiar.

I have many gay friends that say 'that's so gay!' too or other comments with the term to mean that something is really out there, but also bordering on lame or really colorful like the stereotypical gay person hypothetically could not do without. I know others that take some offense to it but I don't really think so many gays anymore find it that negative since I hear many using the term that way.

Usually if someone wants to be a jerk though, he/she will say words like '******' or '***' etc, which generally we respond that one's a bundle of twigs while the other is a cigarette. The word 'gay' seems pretty accepted and if people are using it at others who are gay in a negative way...it's really not having the same impact it used to, which is good!

    ak nice retort <3

the person who said that to you has no life, he needs to know what the real meaning of gay is, i doubt he is aware of that. if he did, he would be saying he was gay, not your shirt =_=. no im kidding...

but im actually kind of wondering what shirt xD

I personally believe they use it because it's the only way of describing something 'not normal' among your group of friends or among your fellow peers. An easy example is the one homosexual in a private school. He's "gay" in that he likes men, and that he acts weird, therefore no one gives him respect or wants to be his friend.

ppl also use the word ****** and *** the same way. it usually isn't used as a sexual orientation insult but just as a plain insult. like how ppl are like "oh, that's so gay" and how ppl are like "you lazy ******"

I think male think that if you act like a female, like wearing stylish, clothes have take care of your hair, wear moisturiser, etc. Then males see that as a weakness, since a man is supposedly suppose to be a strong, non-hygenic, wrinkly, nasty b*****d.
People have never liked anything different that changes their life, being a homosexual to me is not a disadvantage, some of my friends are homosexual, and they are better and nicer than some of my straight friends, if people keep changing what gay means, the next meaning should be, 'Kind and Hygenic Male.'

Okay I understand what all of you are saying, but if gay means attracted to males, then why is that an insult? Do gay people say Dude that shirt is straight? I mean I think that is just dumb

Sadly the meaning of 'gay' has changed alot, along with other words, and I think that alot of people are just plain stupid to say half of the things they do. But I just try and not bother about ther ignoance, not like it would do much because it's been socialy accepted to say "that's so gay/lame/retared/anything else" and alot of people will just go on saying stuff like that.

Normally if the say that they either..
    • think you are GAY
    • Think that object is gay
    • Hate the object there by calling it Gay

    So I don't know really.

It's just a phrase, I guess. I'm gay and I say it sometimes.

To be honest, I even know quite a few gay guys who refer to themselves as a ***, sometimes myself included. If it's by the outside party, however, it's seen as an insult. It's weird but interesting.

You do raise a good point. *thinks* I use it as an insult all the time and never really realised. It did once mean "happy" but if you replace it with the word happy then it would basically just be "dude that shirt is happy!" and that makes even less sense XD I can't help you.

If gay changes over time then hopefully it won't be an insult over the years.
