Hey everyone. It's about that time where we should do a full recap of Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance during the Tokyo Game Show.

Before we start looking back at the information we've received; I also wanted to share a theory. If you agree or disagree, feel free to make your point on the discussion. Also feel free to add your own theory. Please note this thread will contain a number of spoilers if you haven't played Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded.

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance seems to have a very confusing plot. Usually this is the case with all titles from the series, but this time there's something really special about this new Kingdom Hearts title. The first Kingdom Hearts linked to "Ansem". As we moved on between the Crossroads in Chain of memories we were curious of the organization and Namine (who held such power over Sora's memories). Moving forward into the series; In Kingdom Hearts II we learned about the nobodies and that the real Ansem was only a fraud. It was the one and only Xehanort that links back to the past. In Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days we found out who Xion was and how she became number 14; along with the powerful relationship between Roxas, Axel and Xion. In time, Birth by Sleep was released and we were taken back in time (about ten years before the first Kingdom Hearts). Sora wasn't the only keyblade wielder. It all started with Aqua, Ven and Terra. Thus we've learned that Xehanort (the old man) was responsible for Kingdom Hearts and he was indeed the one who impacted many worlds with Vanitas (apprentice). Finally, Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded was released half a year ago. It was the perfect link between the letter that Sora received in the end of Kingdom Hearts II that pieced the puzzle together for Mickey and Yen Sid.

...And now there is Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance. What makes this title so different? Is Sora and Riku training to become the official keyblade wielders? What does sleep have to do with Dream Drop Distance because the title and "sleep" doesn't have anything to do with each other. Now when I think of Dream Drop Distance I think of "bold action" because Nomura has said it so many times. At any rate, I was putting it together. "Sleep" right now is the only thing I can comprehend. FACT. Ven is sleeping. What if this was a way to save Ven or perhaps communicate with Sora in regards to Aqua and Terra. Could this be a piece to the puzzle? At the end of Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded - it was Mickey and Yen Sid who learned where Ven's whereabouts. Could it be possible that my future Kingdom Hearts videos above (which I made made) really link to the future of the new title from the series? The link remains with the "keyhole of sleep". That's the mystery.

The Tokyo Game Show recap is coming up later tonight! Post your thoughts now KHV.

      Yes, they do.

Anyway, I like this theory. It doesn't assume too much and thus leaves very little room for it to be disproven.

Good point, but I mean the Drop Distance doesn't really tie in...or maybe I'm wrong? Lol

Dream Drop Distance for me is still too new and vague in order to even come up with a theory for myself. So for now anything is possible. I'm a bit curious as to what the Dream Eaters are, apparently there are bad and good ones, the bad ones are the enemies Sora and Riku face which eat dreams and plant nightmares. And there are good ones which I'm guessing are Sora and Riku's new allies that eat nightmares.
The fact that Sora and Riku can interact with these dream creatures mean they themselves might be in a state of sleep (Sora himself wondered why he has new clothes). Which all reminds me of Inception, maybe Sora and Riku were thrust into Xehanort's memories (which could tie into the random POV shot of Xehanort summoning his keyblade) by Yen Sid in order to find some clues to saving all the people who are "hurt" (Aqua, Xion, Ven, etc.), since Xehanort was a factor in their "hurt".
Another topic I wonder about is if this is the actual Mark of Mastery exam then did Aqua and Terra go through this Dream training too? Mickey might've done something similar to what Sora and Riku are doing now (that cutscene where he falls into a whirlpool in Birth by Sleep). Though Aqua and Terra were trained under Eraqus while Mickey was trained under Yen Sid so it could be that they have different methods of testing.
Finally, does anyone think if Dream Drop Distance could relate at all to Birth by Sleep vol.2? I was wondering if BbSvol2 was referring to 3D but I see no relation whatsoever which could mean there might be another game...that or Birth by Sleep vol.2 is just the name of the secret ending.

I guess that's an interesting theory. I mean, if Ven is sleeping, than I guess if you're in a world of sleep, wouldn't you technically be able to connect the two?
And also, that video....did you make that yourself?

I don't think there has to be only one test that is the mark of mastery. I'm sure Terra and Aqua had a lot of tests and maybe one of them was with them dreaming but I'm sure that it's not the only test.

Nice theory . . . considering I don't know much about the upcoming title release I can't really say much. I like the idea though and I think if it means more Roxas/Ven then bring it on ^_^

Nomura has stated before that "dream drop distance" means "the distance you fall in your dreams."

I think perhaps it refers to how deep your dream is.

The whole name, while grammatically ambiguous, refers to the distance you fall in your dreams.

I just realized something. The sleeping/falling metaphor was never really expanded on very clearly in the previous KH so I didn' t think about it much, however the dream animal companions that Sora and Riku have in DDD reminded me of the totem concept, which led me to shamanic dreams. I looked into it and here' s what I found :

The word Shaman is derived from the Tungus language of Siberia and is usually translated as “one who knows” or “one who sees in the dark”. Traditionally, Shamans were those members of a community who experienced vivid and powerful dreams and it is in the language of the dreamtime that the power of the Shaman can be understood. Shamanic journeys are undertaken in order to access knowledge or healing, conduct soul retrievals or find power animals.

      Hummm ... soul retrievals ?

Dreams for the shaman are a source of infinite wisdom and understanding.

During such journeys one can meet all manner of beings to whom one can request and receive help, teaching, protection, healing and guidance. The essence of these powerful beings is thought to be beyond our understanding and, therefore, unexplainable, but Shaman’s talk about them as if they were “real” three-dimensional entities. It is perhaps better to describe these beings as visual symbols constructed by our conscious mind to represent a type of energy. The experienced Shamanic practitioner knows that these other worlds and the beings (or energy) that populate them are just as real as the realm described by most people as “everyday reality”, and can affect our lives in both negative and positive ways. In addition, the experienced journeyer knows that the veil separating the worlds is thin and is easily breached, and that the energy contacted in one reality can manifest in another.

Contemporary shamanic dreamwork attempts to understand the spirit and energy contained within the dream and so either bring the energy into ordinary waking consciousness
, or, if negative, remove its influence. The purpose is not only to understand the dream’s message, but also to find an answer and / or an appropriate course of action.

Dreams are a doorway through which the Shamanic practitioner can travel to the inner realms and gain direct access to the unconscious impulses which gave rise to the dream. Nightmares can be transformed and their energy released from the body. Creative potential within the dream can be released and given permission to perform magic and miracles in your life. When the interior life has transformed, the exterior life or middle world is also transformed and you can start to live a new reality.
