Well guys, we are just another day closer to the Tokyo Game Show. Nintendo announced at their conference a list of games that are compatible with their new slide pad accessory. Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance was one of those titles that include this awesome addition! The slide pad is another analog stick to the 3DS console. It's release is set for Japan in December and to follow in other countries.

I hope it is to replace some of the interface with the bottom screen. My biggest complaint in using the DS games is that I dislike the touchscreen. It is supposed to be a "more natural" interface but it always takes me out of the game.

But until we figure out how it will be implemented so who really knows if it will be worth using. I mean it can't hurt anything. It's just compatible, not a requirement. So if people don't like it you don't have to use it.

Ahh that is true. Most touch screen actions on a DS platform of any kind is oft' confusing rather than enjoyable. However, in past KH Nintendo DS releases, Square Enix has not implemented the touch screen capabilities very often. (If any) A majority of the time it's just an extra screen for movies for them. So i honestly don't think getting this Slide Pad would be necessary for a fuller experience. Just a luxury of some sort.

I can only guess that hopefully the additional slide pad will put the camera controls into that just like KH2, free up the L and R buttons to make the whole game feel smoother.

That's true, it would make things a lot easier, especially if they had some sort of L1, L2, R1, R2 system going on.

To be honest, it looks like Nintendo is trying to create a way to make a Playstation controller. The only problem i see is: The newly implemented right controller stick is awkward in comparison to the x, y, a, and b buttons.

It's probably going for camera control. Unless they want to go back to KH1's button scheme but I'm sure they won't. I'm also willing to bet they'll be implementing BBS's camera that made the character disappear if they got very close to the camera.

Yeah that seems logical. Once they come up with a sound style, they usually stick with it rather than revert back. But you never know.

I hated that, I couldn't zoom up on Aqua's aa- *shot* get a good feel of when you are stuck somewhere, and then your character disappears.

Yeah... both of those are true but there were times when I got hit into a corner by the unversed when I was not locked onto them where I could not see what was going on.

I'm still extremely sceptical when it comes to the slidepad. It looks incredibly awkward to use on the right side. Buttons become less accessible, R becomes a pain to press, and if you're right handed, you can all but forget about using the touch-screen.

So yeah, I'm wary. It could work, I supposed, but only for the right game.

That's the thing. We're hoping we don't have to use the touch-screen. As different as it is we really want to go back to our gaming roots and not have to go between holding our hand about the DS and holding the stylus while holding the DS at the same time.

Yeah, i think you would need either or. Nintendo started the touch pad idea, but for some reason, it seems they are straying from it. I honestly do not understand why they would since they are the only game system for a touch system. (Till PSVita releases)

But the slidepad seems some sort of "backup" system for coolness if you ask me... i have mix feelings towards it, but more negative than positive.

But it's also incredibly inconvenient for normal gaming too. After all, what other console has the stick positioned so awkwardly, next to the buttons? We've also got the problem of the R button being semi-blocked. Even if this does allow us to use a second analog stick, I think it'll restrict other aspects too much.

That said, I'll reserve full judgement for when I use it myself.

There is another trigger button that will be next to the R button. This will most likely either replace it or be used for something else. I think it will just function as a 2nd R button though for people who would rather use the analog feature.

Aha, there go a chunk of my worries. The R button is accessible. Awesome.

I still think the side-by-side analog/buttons setup won't turn out too well, but I'm less apprehensive of that than I was of the R button.

I wonder if the old R can be used for something different?

It's possible that some games will use both R buttons but I think that'd be for a more turn based game as it would be difficult to reach. Though think to before the PS2. Dual Analog sticks were not needed for any games. They could be used for PS1 games if I recall correctly but were in no way needed. Then the PS2 came out and people had to get used to the control scheme that is pretty much universal today. So the Dual Analog 3DS scheme will probably take a while to get used to but should be fine in terms of use.

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance is the main reason I bought a 3DS. I like the idea of dual joysticks, but won't it be awkward to hold while playing? Especially during epic boss battles. xD
I may look into buying one alongside my copy of KH3D.

Oh wow, that looks quite cool, I don't really know what the point of an additional analog stick will be but I assume it'll be quite useful xD

      Thanks Mike!

The attachment looks quite awkward imo, for those with smaller hands/fingers, it could make reaching the ABYX buttons difficult, and correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't it throw off the 3D effect? From the 3DS demo I tried in the store, you pretty much had to be looking from the exact correct angle to get the effect; if people have an attachment, won't that throw off how they hold the 3DS, and therefore the 3D?

Either way though, I'd assume the second analog pad would be used for the camera or navigating menus during battle.

This is basically how I feel. I'm really hoping the Nintendo engineers were smart enough to give this some nice mockups and testing where inaccessibility would have become completely obvious. I'm more optimistic than most people are on this one, but we'll have to wait and see.

I hope that they make a 3DS model that just has the second slide pad integrated. It isn't like Nintendo has any issues with releasing a ton of different models these days.
