Dream Drop Distance rolls in with positive reviews

As I'm sure you guys know, Dream Drop Distance just dropped in Europe. On the 17th we posted IGN's review of the 3DS title, which was given an overall score of 8.5/10. More and more reviews have been surfacing since--below you can read short excerpts, see the overall scores given, and head over to each site for the full details.

While some players won’t tune into the Kingdom Hearts series again until the title includes a “III,” others keep up with the new installments no matter what. Dream Drop Distance is one of those titles that reaffirms your faith in Kingdom Hearts (like Birth by Sleep) rather feeling like an obligation (like Re:coded). If you’ve passed up other non-numbered entries, this game provides an extensive journal brimming with plot summaries and character info. It’s not easy to boil-down a 10-year-old series as convoluted as Kingdom Hearts can sometimes be, but Dream Drop Distance does a great job.

In many ways, despite the lavish Disneyfied worlds, this doesn't even feel like a Kingdom Hearts game a lot of the time. The change in tone and tempo may well come as a jolt to long time fans, just as the lumpen opening sections may deter newcomers, but it's rare to see a decade-old franchise reinvent itself with this much vigour. Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance won't be for everybody, but those who fall under its spell are guaranteed a remarkable experience. Roll on Kingdom Hearts 3.

Kingdom Hearts 3D is a great looking, solid game, held back by a few design choices which stop it from being as enjoyable an experience as it should be. If you are new to the series and want to know what it’s all about, then try Kingdom Hearts I or II before diving into this one. However, if you are a series veteran then step this way, as there is still a lot of fun to be had if you can overlook the small gameplay problems.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance features the normal slew of RPG features, such as gaining experience, using item upgrades, and interacting with those in the surrounding world to complete missions, but keeps the action light-hearted and free from the confines of slow pacing thanks to its intuitive battle system. Packing so much into one adventure can sometimes overload players, but the development team has expertly tied everything together to ensure that this is by far the most enjoyable Kingdom Hearts experience yet, and the perfect precursor for Kingdom Hearts III.

These niggles may hold the game back from true greatness, but its highlights are frequent enough to overcome its shortcomings. In fact, given the effectiveness of its dual-screen setup, a certain upcoming Nintendo console would surely be the most appropriate destination for Kingdom Hearts 3. While the wait continues, however, there can be few better ways to fill the gap.

LOL I like how the Official Nintendo Magazine review just boldly suggests that Kingdom Hearts 3 be for a Nintendo console. Not that I'm against the idea I'm ready for KH3 whichever console it comes out. I've been keeping up with all of the releases so far and I don't plan on giving up now! XD

But yeah nice to see the game doing well in reviews.

Right? I'm like shameless plug shameless plug shameless plug. A lot of people are betting on a multi-platform release if/when KHIII releases, so it could happen, but I don't think it as likely as a Sony console.

In recent KH3D interviews, they often compare the 3DS engine to that of the Sony's console.

Silconera 2 part Interview said:

What are you going to do with all that AI for a future Kingdom Hearts game? What are you going to do with all this tech that you developed for 3D?

Well, there are a lot of ideas coming along. I’m not really in a position to talk about the next Kingdom Hearts, but I think AI is something that we really have put more power into. For the next-gen consoles like the PS3 for example, there’s a lot more things you can do compared to the 3DS, just because there’s a lot more CPU power. So, if we were to make a game for the next-gen [systems], for the PS3 for example, we would rather like to utilize that part.
