This post is basicially my "study" on the roles on Donald and Goofy in KH.
In KH1, the duo were the truly along the main characters other than Sora, of course. Their friendship with Sora slowly develops, they grow closer,Thus proven in Hollow Bastion. The final level of KH1 is Sora,Donald,Goofy and Sora,Donald and Goofy only. This is THEIR quest to find their friends, not Sora's unlike KH2.
In KH2, the roles are slowly considered unimportant. This Seems like SORA's quest now to find Riku and Kairi. Donald and Goofy seemed just simply there. Just there. One small exception is on the 2nd visit to Hollow Bastion where the Sora,Donald, and Mickey think that Goofy has "pushed the daisies". They mourn his temporary loss, and plan to avenge his passing. However, when he comes back, there is a slight little friendship scene, but that's where it ends. After that, its back to Sora. Just Sora. This point is proven is TWTNW. After Sora finally finds Riku and Kairi, they seem to "disappear", have little to no lines. In the cutscene before the solo fight with Xemnas, it becomes hard to spot Donald and Goofy. Its all Sora,Riku, and Kairi. The two so called "sidekicks" are no longer needed in the plot. This is further proven during the last few phases of the final battle, where it is just Sora and Riku. Now those two have completely gone into plot oblivion. They have no lines during the ending. They are has beens.
    Your thoughts on this?
Note:This whole bore was just a little thought I had and decided to write it as I thought it out.

Eh... when you put it that way... It's bound to come out sounding horrible but...

... eh, I never really liked that whole Disney aspect of it all. And I always thought Goofy and Donald got in the way in KH1. But in KH2, yeah. You're right. Donald and Goofy's roles died very quickly. In the end, the only reason why we know they're still around is because of the ending clips where Sora and Riku finally get back to Destiny Islands.

I also found that in monstro in KH1, Donald had one line and Goofy had two. What was the point? I wish they would have gotten a bigger role in the series.

Eh... Again, I never really liked them seeing as how I think they had no point... :/

I hope they dull it down with the Disneyness.

Your observation is quite right; their roles in KH2 don't strike out at all - they're totally forgotten at certain points of the game. :/ (I too hope for better characterization. But there's a probability they wont even BE in the next KH game)

Though, I always tried to look at them as the 'comic relief' of the game, if you can call that a role. I also like to think they help balance Sora's character a bit.

Yeah.. If you judge everything by lines... *sigh* I won't even go there... But yeah, I think that. That Donald and Goofy are there to balance and blend with Sora... (hey, they're characters, they do things..)

I've noticed in general that everyone got some sort of small role in the whole series.. (as in, every character got a story-related USE) Examples

    Sora- main character
Donald - sub character supporting main character
Goofy - sub character supporting main character, voice of reason in group
Riku- main character, rival, misguided rogue
Pluto- distraction, mode of transportation (woke up Sora, led musketeers to Castle Oblivion, led Kairi through to Twilight Town)

Chip & Dale- direct Gummi support
Cid- Gummi advice and operation, technological fire-power
    Merlin: magic advice
    Yen Sid: wise guy
    Flora, Fauna, Merryweather- Tailor. lol
Kairi- love interest to main characters, living plot device (being a Princess of Heart)
Axel, Maleficent & Pete: Strange, but appreciated sacrifices...

    Ya know what I mean?

Actually, the first half of KH2 had a lot of "trying to find King Mickey". It was only the second half that they didn't need that anymore, since they had already found him.

And why should it matter if they are needed or not? Sora, Riku, and Kairi are the main characters, not Donald and Goofy. Lol.

Still, Donald and Goofy(in my opinion) helped Sora alot more than Riku and Kairi.
(I'm not trying to say they are bad characters.)

Ok so this is a question for all the people who like Donald and Goofy. Did you feel at the end of KH2 the story started to get better? I think it's because they focused more on the SE part of the game (Organization XIII) than the Disney part (Donald Goofy etc.). Please, tell me what you think.

the ending of first game was more powerfull then in 2nd game. For me at least. Disney is what realy makes this game not some japanese Cliché. And KH II was worse in disney term, they look like fillers now :(
