Yea Rap is music, I mean what kind of question is that? I personally love rap, although the genre is leaning more towards "ringtone rapping" these days, the old stuff was considerable better.
I do enjoy listening to "ringtone raps" (i.e. Soulja Boy, Flo Rida, etc.) The older stuff that had actual meaning was better.

Yes, rap is music. Just because someone doesn't like it doesn't mean it isn't music.

In my opinion, if you took away the beat, instruments, and melody to leave just raw rap...Like words...

Then I'd just call THAT rap, not music.

Yes I think rap is music. Although I don't listen to too much of it, I think it is still a way for people to express themselves. Rap is more about the rhythms and beats rather than blasting electric guitars through stereo speakers which other types of music accentuate.

Yes, I've always considered rap music. It actually takes talent to rap decently, despite what some people think. There is rhythm and a way to flow with words in a pattern that can be difficult for people to master effectively. Music is about the flow and rhythm so to me, that puts rap in. Now if someone were just rambling on, ignoring some beat in the background and had no intentions of following a pattern etc, then it'd be up for debate.

Despite the fact I do not like country music to nearly any level except a few artists who's voices and lyrics do not annoy me so much, I could never say it's not music. It's just not a preference of music I like. I can say that a bunch of singers that sing all nasally etc is not 'singing' to me, but in the end, that's not a very fair thing to assess. If I am to remain unbiased, I can just say their style of singing sounds awful and unappealing to me. It goes the same for rap in that regard.

Also, all music is about how people feel and express themselves and some people will relate, while others won't. Rap music is about a variety of things. Not just about violence, drugs, sex. However, I encourage you to find a genre of music that artists have not gone into sex, violence and drugs. Maybe some old 50s stuff and prior was relatively 'clean' but even some of that has stuff regarding those 3 topics. The two most attacked types of music: rap and hard rock/metal always get labeled but I think it's unfair as I have proven even in a research paper that other genres have plenty of it seen, even in operas, and country music can have loads of it. The problem with rap and metal/hard rock is that the people who sing about them just come right out and say what they are going to say, bluntly. They don't dance around the topic. They say it as it is. Those of us who like those genres are also often people that come right out and say things are as they are. We don't have to allude to things and just because there is some cussing and crass language and brutal honesty, it doesn't mean that the music itself is wrong. It just speaks to different people. Some find openness rather offensive. Others embrace it.

Omg Repliku, that was deep :3

I totally agree. Rappers can be great composers and some put deep thought about what they want their lyrics to reflect. Rap, to me, portrays spoken word, and I think in general, the genre is misunderstood. But as with all things, it can be good and it can be bad. Music in general has evolved and some of the older rap artists seem to understand what their music is supposed to be about. Telling a story through musical expression, to me, is how music should be.

Well, if you get into a fight with gangsters(fighting with words), they'll "cab yo ass". That's often being said in their songs as well. I can't call that harmony.

Harmony has nothing to do with the vocabulary of the song.

Anyway, the point is that just because you don't like rap, or even hate rap, does not mean it's not a musical genre.

In general though, rap is still considered a genre. As I said before, the way that the rappers have created their music, and the words in the songs have changed, not always for the better. I mean, I don't like rap music that is constantly throwing around f-bombs and talking about sex constantly. I mean, enough is enough. But to a certain extent, if the song calls for it and there is a logical explaination to the song that needed to incorporate that, I guess you could get away with it. "Meet me in the club, it's going down" to me isn't a story that the artist is trying to portray, it's just something catchy for people to dance to for a while before they get tired of it.

True, I hate rap. But that's not why I'm saying that it's not music. That would be like me when I was a few months younger.

Music is a way to express your feelings, not to say you'll shoot someone in the ass when he or she talks crap about you. True, Ac/Dc plays songs about drugs all the time, but they don't sing about killing people.

Still, like I said, there are exceptions in rap groups. But the music like 50 Cent and all those things... I just can't call it music.

I don't like rap much either. I mean, occasionally I hear it on the radio or I find a song that is really good so I listen to it before I get bored with it. But I agree with you, 50 Cent...no, I can't call that good rap music.

I really don't see how anyone could be so narrow minded. Seeing this thread seriously makes me lose faith in some of the members of this site...just because you don't like rap doesn't invalidate it as a form of music. Music is a form of expression. It's a way of conveying a message or feeling to listeners, making them see in a way the artist can. Rap clearly follows this.

Secondly, rap has used instruments and singing. Some rap has been known to incorporate rock music as well and vice versa. Look at Linkin Park, to name one. How the hell could anyone disregard all of that? Bullshit thread, I'm sorry.

Mandark I hope youre not thinking of me as narrow-minded, as I stated before I do believe rap is a legit genre of music. I for one really like Linkin Park.

Not you. Mainly the creator and anyone who does not agree rap is a form of music. Sorry if you thought I was aiming that at you...

    It's okay, I was just unsure :3

But yes, I agree that even though people don't like the genre, it's still considered a genre and is really good when incorporated into bands like Linkin Park and the Gorillaz for example.
