... so I should preface this.

So, as anyone who owns a PS3 should know, Blu-Ray disks aren't region locked: therefore, you can play any PS3 game and any PS3. However, does anyone know if this extends to the DVD drive inside my original black monolith? Could I import a PS2 game form, say, America and play it on my EU PS3 without having to get swap magic etc? Just a random question that's been bugging me for a while.

Well, if PS3s aren't region locked and the game you wanna play is capable of playing on your PS3, it should work. The games themselves aren't, so yeah.

It first of all depends on your PS3 model, I know only the first generation made are backward compatible with PS2 games. Therefore, if it's the newer versions it definitely won't work. If you're unsure then check the model on the internet. If it is then you could try it, if you have a friend with an imported PS2 game then test it out, if not then you could always just risk it. I don't see why it shouldn't since the reason it doesn't work on EU PS2's is due to the region lock, without that then they would work. I like it, I never thought of it that way before. But yes, test it and then come back and tell us the result ^^

Well, I definately know that my PS3 is one of the early ones with backwards compatability. I'll need to get a hold of an imported PS2 game to test it out though, so I'll save up some money soon and see if I can get something.

PS2 games are region locked. You won't be able to play imported PS2 games on your PS3.

While PS3 games and Blurays in general are region free, the PS3 itself still has a region that it's locked to. For example, a PS3 bought in the US is in the NTSC U/C region while a PS3 bought in Japan is of the NTSC J region. PS3 games are able to ignore the region completely because they aren't locked to a particular region but PS2 games unfortunately won't work because they are region-locked.

Oh well, it was worth a shot I guess. At least, for me, there's no such thing as region locking for games now, so no more Re:CoM incidents in the future!
