River is a great character, her involvement is crucial for the doctors development emotionally.

Martha is the worst companion by far, just throwing that out there.

...Well, I can't say I hate River as much as Makaze. I usually just sorta. Tolerate her. I think of her like I think of Jack, most of the time; a reaccurring character who helps out with the Plot Of The Week then pisses off for a bit until the next cameo.

And, overall, her story is quite brilliant.
    She's Amy's baby? Woah.
But River as a character, I cannot stand her.
I outright hated her in The Wedding of River Song.

And the sad part is, in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, you can see how much potential she has. You can see all this great stuff she could have done and been. But then she just... lost it all. It's almost tragic, really.

As for Rose, I adore her. She was a great character, but I'm quite content with how she left. And that might be one of the reasons I can't see the Doctor loving River. He loved Rose, would have done anything for her, and it hurts that she's gone, even as Eleven. Sure, maybe he's starting to get over it a little, but not completely.
In one of the very early serials with the First Doctor, The Aztecs, The Doctor actually does have a brief romance with an Aztec woman. He loved her, and at the end of the serial, he lost her, and he was devastated. It took him a couple of bodies to get over it. So if you think that the Doctor got over ROSE, who he spent so much more time with and loved so much, with merely one regeneration, you're freaking nuts.

Wikipedia once told me that my school was a house boat and the class joke was a biochemical madman, I don't put much faith in this.

Yeah my high school had some funny moment.

    there already were bro
I like her so far? Obviously I've only seen that very small slice of her, but we'll see haha.

Also I am ridiculously fond of Rose. Martha was alright, it bothered me that
she made everything about her. Especially when she left, she's all "boohoo doctor you don't look at me." Really Martha? You're saving planets etc and all that matters is your love life?
I have to admit, though, I do enjoy Donna lots!

What parts of his emotions were developed through her? Please give some tangible examples.

I didn't mind her either when I first saw those episodes, but she gets annoying very fast as soon as she shows up again.

....woooow, it's like talking to a religious extremist, uncaring of anyone's opinion but their own and doing their damn best to shove theirs down our throats, lighten up ol' chap. Opinions are opinions let everyone have and build theirs on their own, your prodding hand is not required.

Actually, you are ignoring me and not talking to me. I asked you a question instead of assuming that your opinion was valid (something I consider folly). I questioned your opinion. You did not answer. You assumed that in merely questioning you I was religiously against you. This is not a discussion yet. Or, it was not.

I view things in terms of objectivity. As far as I can tell, River Song has no objective value regarding The Doctor's personality. Stating that she has an effect on him is not a matter of opinion. "She is a good character" would be subjective. "She does this in the series" is not. Please do not try to turn an objective statement into an opinion to avoid defending it.

Settle down all, this is a Doctor Who thread for goodness sake.

River? I really liked her. Then the more we saw of her the less I liked her. As a one off she was a fun and interesting character, but now she just annoys me. And like was said before, NO chemistry with the Doctor, it's just kinda shoehorned in. And don't get me started on Martha, she was just whinewhinewhine wingewingewinge.

Donna I love. Donna I was all prepared to dislike because I didn't like Catherine Tate as a comedian, and I didn't think she would be any good at acting. But, just 'Fires of Pompei'. She had me crying buckets.

Anyway has anyone else heard that the actress for Madame de Pompadour from 'The girl in the Fireplace' is supposed to be returning? I really liked her, despite her dating David Tennant IRL (cat fight ensues)

I didn't hear that. Is she going to be the new companion, or is she just around for something else?

The new companion is some girl called Jenna-Louise Coleman. She's relatively unknown, I guess?
She looks like she'll be okay, actually, but we'll have to wait and see.

I think the reason Martha is so hated by everyone is that she was pretty much created by Davies to say that nobody can replace Rose, which I think is a waste of a character. Also, I think everyone's forgetting that Martha left because she wanted to look after her family, NOT because the Doctor didn't love her. That was just extra incentive. She had almost lost everyone important to her, and she was not gonna let it happen again.

This is true, though she did make many of the events in the episode all about her as well. Whenever The Doctor was feeling pained over Rose, it wasn't really "oh man Doctor I'm sorry you've had to go through that," it was "the Doctor doesn't love me :C." I'm not saying she can't be a little angsty about that, but it felt like every episode had "I LOVE THE DOCTOR BUT HE DOESN'T LOVE ME BAWWWW."

I liked Martha otherwise, which is what kind of sucked about it. :L

You're making Martha sound like some kind of scorned and rejected woman, with no right to feel alone in the world because her family doesnt understands her and when this man from the stars whisks her on a journey, finally feeling some deep connection with someone just to be rejected by him because he's still in love with his ex.

To be honest, sounds like the start of a ****** romcom to me. But to be honest, I understand why Martha is like she is. Can't blame how her character went so I can't hate her. It's just something you shouldn't worry about. I thought she was alright compared to what she could've been like.
