this might be incredibly morbid but if he didnt die, what would nomura have done with him anyway? I mean with roxas gone and the other org members slowly dying, axel had no reason to keep going. besides, it makes him seem more like a good guy since he died.

 

Not in that way. Perhaps in some Kamikaze feat of action, but not by killing Nobodies. Perhaps Sora is fighting Siax and looses, Siax is about to execute, when Axel steps though a DtD wounded, hitting back a few lesser nobodies, running forward, Wipping off his robe revealing cool clothers underneath, hurls himself at Siax, explodes in a ball of flame, Siax is obliterated, Axel Lying near dead on the floor. Roxas wanders out of Sora, looks at Axel, says a few memorable words, then Axel either A. Dies B. Is absorbed by Sora.

But dying in a ball of flamer to kill a squad of nobodies? Ridiculous.
