Hey guys I was thinking about this for the past couple weeks and I'm wondering if once they finish the long waited game by many Kingdom Hearts fans "Kingdom Hearts III" if they will continue the story of Kingdom Hearts. Write your thoughts below on what you think will happen in the future of Kingdom Hearts.

Hasn't the series' director expressed he'd like to continue working on the series after this story is done?

Yeah, I seem to remember something along the lines of "Kingdom Hearts 3 will mark the end of the Xehanort saga" implying that there could be additional games, just that Xehanort won't play a part...

I'm wondering how they're going to pull another saga if Sora will always be the protagonist.

Either they do a spin-off series with a different cast and story or it's really done for good. They really over-extended this franchise as it is, and it's only because they released a ton of sequels, prequels and midquels and so many different handhelds, they frustrated a lot of people because they wouldn't get the chance to play each title.
IF they were to make a new storyline, they need to learn from the lessons of this current storyline and keep the sequel crap limited to 2 different systems or do multi-console titles and release them all on all the consoles.

Yes please. As much as I love the original cast, I'd love to see how other new character can interact with the game's universe and lores. We haven't had a normal person interacting with Heartless and Nobodies in years (that guy that got owned by a Soldier Heartless and Roxas' gang witnessing Nobodies).

Not really, they can make some new things and/or expanding on what we already know.

Took me a lot of time to understand what someone stated in a couple of minutes; the plot got extended because of how much of a profit they could make from various titles. ;v

KH on the PS2, CoM on the GBA, KH2 on the PS2, coded for mobile, Days for DS, BbS for PSP, Re: coded for DS, Re: CoM for PS2 and KH3D for 3DS. Lot's of entirely different consoles and companies right there.

The storyline issue is because Nomura doesn't revise his writing, he furthers the plot as he goes, only expanding on what he remembers. As for the different systems crap, I think it isn't Nomura's decision on what console he releases what.

Nomura has said in the past that Sora will always be the main character of Kingdom Hearts, and he has also said that KH3 will be the end of Xehanort's Saga. So yes, I think they will continue, but with a different villain - but still with Sora etc at the helm.

    This.

But I wouldn't mind seeing Sora & co. leave the game. Retain the same elements--Keyblade Masters, same universe, mix of Disney characters, Heartless, Nobodies, etc., but an entirely new cast of characters. They're already feeling a bit overused by this constant sequel/prequel business, having a fresh new group could breathe some new life into the series, retaining old fans but also making a new entry point for new fans.

Pretty much what might happen if Nomura staples Sora as the protagonist of the franchise.

Of course, they aren't going to make a BAJILLION games with Xehanort, end the saga and then use him again. Wording it like that reminded me of Ganondorf from Zelda, which I doubt Tetsuya is going to pull something like that. ;v

What I'm picturing right now is that, if the next game takes place years after KH3, then Sora could be a Master teaching his three students (seeing as how trios are a popular trend in Japan). Other than that, they can always just make games years before BbS, seeing as how it isn't the first time Nomura has made the inverse on what he's said.

They could just act like cameo appearance, like somewhere in a crowd, a poster, a reference, etc. Definitely after KH3 no one is going to forget who Master Xehanort was, but he doesn't have to be in the game, they could just reference him as that one all powerful Keyblade Master that was a universal threat or something along those lines (like in Phantom Hourglass; Ganon isn't in the game, but he's referenced).

This is what Final Fantasy is basically; a recollection of legends, myths and lores applied to different scenarios gameplay and plot-wise. Nomura has experience with this, seeing as how he's taken a more direct role with FF titles the more they come (Fabula Nova Crystalis is an example of utilizing the same elements but with different ideas).

My thoughts exactly. KH3 will be the grand closure of the saga, meaning the fans want to see everyone taking part in the last battle and finish this once and for all.

Yes. If people had just entered the series with KH3D, imagine the confusion they'll suffer, lol.

I can't really picture anything past the Xehanort saga utilizing the SRK trio. But at the same time, I don't really want SE to just ditch them for some new characters. It wouldn't really feel like Kingdom Hearts anymore.

Although, now I'm picturing a huge time jump where Kairi is a grandmother telling her granddaughter the legend of the keyblade masters, mirroring the story told by Kairi's grandmother when she was a little girl. And then that young girl grows up and becomes AWESOME.

Then that said granddaughter goes to distant realms and meets Korra. (Sorry, sounded the same. xD)

I wouldn't mind having Sora, Riku, and Kairi remain the main protagonists after the Xehanort Saga, but I just feel the characters (By that I mean mostly Kairi) are far too cliche for my liking. However, we did see
Yen Sid summoned her to help fight the 13 darknesses, as she can wield a Keyblade.
Hopefully through that, she will become more of a stronger character...

But altogether, I have no idea what will beyond Xehanort's final (Hopefully) demise.

But really, I agree--if they move on from the usual trio, I would still like them to have cameo appearances or mentions. Even though getting a whole new batch of characters would be very Final Fantasy-esque, that's no reason to lose the history of the series, and the characters that have kept so many people coming back.

I do fear though that any new trio would merely be a carbon copy of Sora Riku & Kairi. I think Nomura's characters can get a little stale... but I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt, hah.

I don't really see the series going anywhere else. Any idea they use now would most likely be beating what was once a dead horse, but is now more of a small pile of dried animal remains. The best they could probably do would be a massive time jump, to say, 100 years later. Do a LoK, and have, like, one person from the original group still alive.

    This.

And it's probably a silly hope but Square might even think of doing an MMORPG of KH. There have been many suggestions for it and lots of people back it up. Maybe they might listen for once...

As much as I hate to admit it, I agree that they need to move on with a new trio. However, I still can't see how they're going to move on past the Xehanort Saga. It seems like they are reaching their limit... and as said before, SE is beating on a pile of horse meat. Not to say that I won't be loyal... I would continue to support the series and give them my money. But I'm more or less curious about what they're planning to do. Hell, even the idea of an MMO sounds appealing. Nevertheless... the series is getting redundant and I don't see how they're going to continue the series. At best, I'll say the series will only make it to the end of the next saga before ending completely. Kingdom Hearts isn't Final Fantasy, it's limited by the Disney continuity. So unless they can pull something out of their arse, they would just be sucking the life out of the rotting horse meat they've been tenderizing for their company picnic.

It doesn't have to be a trio, but with how they seem to be a staple in the series, it's much likely possible that a new group of protagonists will very well be a trio.

Invent a new villain with a different backstory to Xehanort's and different motives.

Everything there is to the history of Kingdom Hearts has been explored, but that doesn't mean they can reuse these concepts with new things.

With how TWEWY was included, I'm inclined to think they're considering the possibility of adding SE games worlds.

After the disaster that was Final Fantasy XIV, I don't think Square is going to be eager to re-enter the MMORPG field. If the reboot goes well then maybe, but I'm also not sure how well that would fit in with Kingdom Hearts. I can't see it expanding from the single narrative it has now, just doesn't seem like Nomura's style. But I suppose it's always a possibility.

I agree, I really don't see Kingdom hearts as a MMORPG. The whole thought of that, just doesn't seem to make sense. But if they do continue the Series like everyone is saying, I think if it is possible, that Sora, Riku and Kairi meet their past selves. I meant meet Ventus, Vanitas, Roxas and all of them. Just an idea though.

I don't even think an MMORPG would work. I mean, unless it were the Keyblade Wars, there would be a finite number of keyblades, so it wouldn't work.
