I do believe music can help you in ways of doing better in school in the case of listening to it unless you really need to concentrate on the material you're studying/learning. Like I know classical music helps me do better in Math (but that's just from personal experience) and I also think if you listen to Japanese songs while working on English, that helps because if you think about it, you can still enjoy the music except it won't intefere with English, if looking at an English study guide...or at least that's what my former English teacher said. XD But he was talking about Mexican music.....

I'd say. As a study my teacher made us take a test. Then he had us take another test with the privilege to listen to our iPods/MP3/whatevers.

To make a long story short we all did better on out tests by about 3.1% or some number like that. Not too shabby, I'd say.

My dad (a musician) told me that often composers (especially for classical music) have to be very good at maths, I suppose there's some sorts of patterns in the compositions... Other than that, I don't see much help from music with school work. Both me (I play guitar, a little piano and sing) and my dad are/were a bit above average in school, nothing exceptional.

I think that learning an instrument can help to some degree because it works on focusing your co-ordination and your concentration, but I don't think it will put you miles ahead of everyone else.

With regards to LISTENING to music whilst studying, I think it depends on the person as to whether it is a help or a distraction. I personally find it hard to function without music, from the moment I wake up to the moment I sleep I usually have something playing.

I was going to say about that xD I remember being told that when I was studying maths.

i always listen to music when i am doing homework, and i am not exaggerating.

i think that it does help me with my homework. it keeps my focused on one thing, keeps the outside noise out of my head, and helps me do my work better.

i have actually heard that if a student takes a music class, that they tend to do better in school.

Learning how to play doesn't help. At least not in my case. Maybe being a decent composer is better than playing an instrument. >>

I'm doing the same with five years of music related classes. << But maybe I'm just like that. XD

Music only helps if it doesn't distract you and is something you like. If it sucks, you can't focus. I work about the same with or without it. Usually better without. >>

I completely agree with Mr. Pumpkin. I dont think that it helps if you know how to play an instument. When i am doing homework, i put my iPod on and i consentrate. but when i dont, i have a huge problem consentrating.

Certainly. A few of my teachers put on classical music while we're working, and it aids well in my concentration. Same goes for chewing gum in terms of increasing overall concentration and focus.

It would depend on what kind of music you listen to.
If you were to listen to distracting music(only when you are working. I am not bashing these genres.) such as "screamo" or gangsta rap, the lyrics/sounds can be very disturbing when you are working.
Plus, people will also brag about what songs they have etc. etc.

    As I said before...it depends.

I listen to music in school through my iPOD when I'm working. I always turn it off when the teacher is talking but ever since I started, I can get more work done in classes.

Subjective to both the person, the actual subject or task at hand, and the type of music, as stated multiple times in this thread. For example, the act of memorization has been known to dwindle when listening to most types of music due to these said distractions. Music, however, can also prove to help the coordination and organization of the subject person if the steady rhythm is unchanging; a constantly changing rhythm can lead to more disorganization due to confusion interpreted from the musical rhythm and into the brain.

One hundred percent yes! I can't focus on my homework unless I'm listening to music. But that's just one aspect. I'm a singer. I'm in the choir and theater at my school. I make up little jingles to help me memorize things (like vocab or math formulas or the Gettysburg Address). Music is a big part of my life, it helps with everything.

I think it depends what lesson it's in as well. For example if your painting in an art lesson then music may be helpful. However if your trying to work out the sum of the angles of a triangle in maths, it might be abit distracting. Or maybe thats just me :)

I think that when it comes to studying and stuff-music is a huge help especially if your listening to mellow indie-ish stuff like BLUE FOUNDATION - EYES ON FIRE or FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE-COSMIC LOVE-I guess it depends on the the person -_-

The general idea about this is that classical music is good to listen to when studying, however studies have shown that any genre of music as long as it is instrumental (no singing at all) helps people study. Music definately does help people's minds as long as it does not contain words, if it does you may as well have three people talking to you at once about whatever the lyrics are.
