chemistry is just a hard class. Either you get it, or you don't. But whatever the case, you really need to study your butt off for that class.

It depends on how hard the aforementioned friend had strove to receive at least a decent mark. If they used all of their physical effort and mental capability, and still received a C, then clearly the teacher expects too much of her (which may not actually be a bad thing), or she does not appreciate the effort of the work.

By the way, when I mean "physical effort and mental capability", I mean enough to grant the student an A, at the least.

No. Grades are an assessment of how well you are doing in something, and how well you did it is not affected by how hard you tried(THANK GOD). C's are an assessment that is average, and I do not consider average good for me.

Usually the effort put into the work affects the quality, which most of the time affects your grade relatively.

Yes, the effort does affect your grade, but lower grades don't become more acceptable by society if you tried real hard.

I am fine with C's. I prefer not to have them at all, though I do definitely think we think of them as "Bad" when in reality a C means simply "Average".

That being said... I've had classes where I've honestly tried, I've done homework and projects and such and I just can't understand the subject matter (PHYSICS, I'M LOOKING AT YOU.). I was completely content with a C in that class because despite how much I really did try to understand the subject, I plain ol' couldn't.

Teachers always do that.I don't see the big deal about this.
They just want to motivate you to try and get better grades.
It doesn't sound like your friend is motivated.
For me C's aren't something to get upset over, but they aren't something to be proud of either. That's coming from an A student whose parents get annoyed at C's.They are average, not good or bad. "/

I think the teacher thinks she can do better in the class and is pushing her to try a bit more. You should too.

C's are still guaranteed as passing, so who cares?

No I don't find this logic stupid. I feel as long as you tried your best and asked on how you can improve then that's all you can do. Eventually the C's would turn to B's or A's in due time. Now giving up or not caring at all would result in D's or F's which shows lack of commitment or efftot, but C's are not bad at all. Just keep doing your best.
