It's really not that simple though. If it was, I'm sure many regular smokers would have dropped the habit by now. It's unfortunate, but it's a very real addiction that takes just as much effort as any other to shake. Stopping too suddenly can even do more harm than good.

In any case, I have family members who smoke and I can't stand watching it hurt their health, not to mention the smell. Just a brief visit can leave the smell on my clothes for a few days. That in itself has deterred me from trying it pretty effectively so far, and I don't have plans to give it a shot in the future either.

Indeed. I meant it more as he really needs to make an effort to stop, which brings me to an interesting question: What do people do to get over it?

Mostly, they start smoking less and less over time.

But how do they fight with the addiction of having to smoke? Isn't it similar to if you all of a sudden stop drinking alcohol, your body goes into shock?

Not shock, as much as withdrawal. And it's generally just self control. If they really want to stop, they can usually control themselves, or they get nicotine patches. If they don't stop, and don't really try, it's cause they don't want to.

The sad truth about this is I am literally the only person at work who doesn't smoke so I have little reason to take breaks ;-; So instead I just "go to the toilet"...

Don't intend to start anytime soon. A family friend I used to visit every summer smokes, and the smell was just horrendous.
On top of that, I do value my lungs, and since I had breathing problems as a child, it wouldn't be smart to risk it anyway.

As it' s already been said they try to slow down progressively. Or they go cold turkey (my cousin stopped the second she learned she was pregnant). The trick is not to trade an addiction for another, many people start drinking, chewing gum all the time or something.

The addiction isn' t just physiological, it' s also psychological, otherwise patches would be enough.

Also, you' re still functional when you' re smoking. Unlike hemp or alcohol it doesn' t alter your cognition, which is why most people need some sort of reality check to want to stop : being pregnant, landing at the hospital because of it, something like that. I know that it' s bad for my health, but for all I know I' ll die in a car crash long before my lungs fail me. Thus the immediate urges always win.

I have a Hookah and that's about it. Rarely smoke it by myself but mostly do it when I have a group of friends over. Hookah tobacco has no tar and little nicotine. You can get tobacco-less... tobacco. It's not tobacco its just a jello like substance if you just like the flavor.

If it floats your boat, I'm fine with it and won't really bother someone for it but I usually keep my distance from the cigs because I'm not fond of the smell.

I already have terrible asthma so I don't think I'd ever go around to even trying it either. Plus, I would rather spend my very limited cash elsewhere lol

Sadly, yes I do smoke. I was kind of suffering from chronic depression in high school and I never meant for it to become an addiction but that's what it led to. I would quit but I've currently got so much stuff going on in my life it's hard to let go of. It's worse if I'm around other smokers because I see them smoking and the urge is there. As long as I stay busy the urge goes away but my nerves are a constant wreck due to classes, and family issues. I know it's a disgusting habit and I know what it does to you. I will say that I never started smoking thinking that it made me look cool because honestly I don't think it looks cool I started due to stress and depression. I needed something that I could be dependent on. Something I could fall back to when it all became too much.

I could lie right now and say that I'm going to quit or try to quit smoking soon but in all honesty until I find a stable way of life I'm too dependent on cigarettes to quit. Coming from a family of smokers and having lost a few due to smoking it really pains me to do it but I need the support right now. In no way am I encouraging smoking. It's awful and you're a fool if you ever pick up the habit. It's not pleasant to hear, nor say, but I could more than likely fill up four or five coffins with the butts of the cigarettes I've smoke over the years.

I do try to be cautious about where and when I smoke. I won't smoke around children. I won't smoke in a crowd of people. I would never want to see anyone suffer for something they didn't do. As someone who was constantly around smoke as a child I can vouch that it's no fun trying to breathe through the solid fog of disgusting floating around the air. I was actually surprised at myself for getting addicted in the first place having come to hate it so much as a child.

To all those smokers out there who are making the commitment to stop themselves I applaud you. Hopefully I can have the will power to quit with you, in time. For those of you out there just starting, please stop. It's not cool. There are other ways of dealing with stress. Smoking is never the answer but it gets harder not to fill in that circle the more you take the test. If you're upset or in a bad spot in life, try talking to someone. See if you can't find a better means to release your emotions. An extra incentive is that the money you spend a year on cigarettes is probably more than you get for your tax refund.
