    You know, when evil wins...
Or that the hero dies or something.

I mostly like happier endings, but some sadness can make it more powerful emotionally... The villains shouldn't win, because that's just not right, but a hero dying from sacrificing themself or something can be a really good ending.
It just depends on whether the filmmakers pull it off or not. It's usually better if at least one main dies, because it's more dramatic and realistic, and often works well in movies.

Depends who you see as the villian. :v

Huh... to be honest I like films with sad endings once in a while, they tend to stick in my head longer and so in my mind I consider them better.

Happy endings are so cliche. :3

Well not everything in this world has a happy ending, why make movies end happy all the time when in real life your not always going to get your own way. A sad ending is good somtimes, I enjoy both.

It really depends on what ending it is, if its the villain wins and he takes over the kingdom of some random realm I don't really mind but if its something like the lovers die or something like the ending from House of Flying Daggers I LOVE IT XD its so tradgic its brilliant

    I hate sad endings.I remember S-M 3.Harry died.And I liked his character.Also,when Old Yeller died.They shot him.People cried over that.I don't like sad endings,but some movies,it brings suspense to future sequals.If they make one.

Yeah. It actually makes the movie worth remembering, because it was different. Although a lot of the time the hero dies for the greater good. Like Crisis Core's ending, if Zack didn't die, the ending would have been crap.

There has been studies down about this question. The question boils down to our predisposed notion of needing something to resolve in a manner that makes us enjoy the movie.

If you were to make two versions of the same movie except alter one so the ending is "unresolved" or the main character dies but has more story and deeper thought provoking experiences, 9 times out of 10, people will take the happy ending.

I like both, actually. Happy endings tend to sometimes be cheesy, thus sad endings can be outstandingly acted/written. But it'd be really depressing if all of the movies I watched had sad endings. Depends on the movie, though.
    So I'm 50/50.

    I love bittersweet/poignant endings.

    Stuff like:

    Edward Scissorhands
    Stand by Me
    My Girl
    The Outsiders
    Forrest Gump

    and that episode of Futurama with Fry's dog. ;3;

    What Mish said. : D

Endings like in Edward Scissorhands and Forrest Gump are my favorites. Also, endings that totally take you by surprise are good as well. I don't understand why people have to idealize movies so much to the point where the ending has to be almost finalized; a cliffhanger is fine, too, even if there's no sequel. It warrants more creativity imo.

Meh, as many have said, I enjoy both, as long as the ending is well done. I think the most realistic is when ONE (or some, but not all) of the main characters dies

like in Star Trek: Nemesis, where Data dies at the end

It tends to add realism to the situation, IF it is done well.

(I know that Star Trek: Nemesis has been out for a while, I just felt like using a spoiler box. First spoiner box, FTW!)

i would rather see a sad ending then a happy ending.cause like other people have said before me,nothings perfect, bad stuff will always happen.sad endings leave more of a impression than happy endings.there are some sad endings i like more than other ones.i would rather see the hero of the movie than a lover lose there loved one.

It really depends what mood I'm in, but I'd say usually happy endings. Sad endings are more realistic, and the plot and character development are often better. But I don't know...

I'm not really sure how to say this. I suppose I prefer happy endings because it gives me the chance to think that everything will be okay. Movies, in a way, are my way of escaping the unfortunate world we live in. I'm certainly not an escapist, but movies with happy endings let you believe that things can turn out happily in the real world.

This is kinda a depressing post, and I'm not depressed. But I think most of us live our lives trying to ignore the unfortunate things that occur around us. When you watch a sad movie ending, you're reminded of those things, and it makes you want to fix them. But you can't fix sadness and pain. It's a part of life, which I believe is hard for a lot of people to accept.

i agree with you 100% on this.we do use movies to escape the life's that we live for 2 hours.but also,if you watch a movie with a happy ending/story,some might think
"why can't my life be this good."
"why can't i have happy endings like that?"
which is best to just remember that most movies are not real.that's the way i see it.

I get mad at sad endings. I yell at them and say "DAMN YOU FOR RUINING MY DAY", but sometimes it places the story in a real world context by being a better reflection of life.

I like the sadder endings, the happy ones make me depressed, because they rarely ever happen for real, so why even bother to dream about it? Sad endings help make the characters more human and real. Plus it gives me an excuse to cry.
