I'm asking this because my cousin from California, who's visiting me in the UK was baffled as to why there was a washing machine in the kitchen.

There's nothing uncommon about having laundry areas in the kitchen

I personally haven't seen a washing machine directly in the kitchen. Off in a little room beside the kitchen, but not in it =)
However, I wouldn't doubt that there are Americans who have them in there haha

I can't remember seeing a washing machine in the kitchen in any of my friends' house. More often than not, the laundry machines were in a small room or the garage.

I hope you're aware that Jⱥy is talking about dishwashers.

    Washing Machines ~ for clothes
    Dishwashers ~ for dishes

The latter is almost always in the kitchen, while the former can be either in, near or away from the kitchen.

I live in America and I have never in my life seen a washing machine in the kitchen. You sure your cousin wasn't confusing a dishwasher for a washing machine?

It's common in apartments to put washing machines (for clothes) in the kitchen just because there's nowhere else for them, if the apartment even includes them. Most people have them in the garage or basement. I've seen them in bathrooms or dedicated laundry rooms too. They're generally considered undesirable in kitchens because
    • they make a lot of noise (sometimes)
    • kitchens are usually downstairs & bedrooms upstairs (or at least, far from one another)
    • no one wants to see ya panties rolling around in the wash
    • kitchens are high traffic areas (esp. if you entertain)
Dunno why you'd put a dishwasher anywhere but the kitchen.

I watch a lot of HGTV.

My washing machine is close to the kitchen, there is a "service room" (don't know how you call it in english) , that we usualy keep laundry machine, cleaning products, brooms etc.. It is usualy adjacent to the kitchen, even when I lived in a house it was like that (but larger areas), this "service room" may have a huge window (for drying purposes) and special piping that allows to have a water tap and the washing machine at the same time.
Basicaly our kitchens are like these:

(This one is kind different from most as it has also an secondary room for the cleaning lady, with a bathroom, old apartaments have rooms like these nowdays is too expensive to have cleaning ladys working in your house)

You need a tap water tank for washing special fabric , so as you can see this service room is almost at the kitchen.
But that's in here, we normally don't put the landry at the basement/garage etc... also almost no one has a basement or attic

Yeah, it's not completely uncommon here to have dedicated laundry rooms, as I said. I live in an older house so we're not as lucky, but it really varies from house to house. On the whole, though, I think most Americans will have the washer in the basement or garage, if they have one. If they don't then it can vary.

My basement has a laundry area of sorts, with the washing machine, dryer, a sink for cleaning special stuff, etc. My house is generally horrifying though, so I wouldn't consider it the norm.

You people are sexist. Women should not be called washing machines.

Yeah, the age/general layout of the house will usually determine where everything is. We have a little space in the wall beside our kitchen for the washer & dryer; before we moved here, it was outside on the porch (with a vent for the dryer and some plumbing + a sink for the washer). Last house just had it in the garage, which was adjacent to the kitchen.

    tl;dr ~ it's all 'bout the plumbing

Same here, with the difference being that the house didn't come with them.

I didn't realise this, it's fairly common here to have a washing machine in the kitchen, I do as well as most people I know. Not that many people here seem to have a pantry/small room off to one side and I don't know anyone with it in their garage.

Exactly, so it'd make sense to have the washing machine away from the bedroom to lessen the chance of waking someone up.. o: In my house, we generally start the washing up just before we go to bed.

oh, you quaint, repressed chicka. Where I'm from we let our panties roll around in the wash in full view of everyone present, as well as hang them out to dry in our garden for all of our neighbours to gaze upon.

Quite often here, the washing machine is part of the kitchen suite and has a cupboard door in front of it, making it look like a normal cupboard and fit with the rest of the kitchen. This solves the problem of people seeing your underwear and also muffles the sound they make quite a bit.
