Been hearing a lot of bits and pieces about this and it sounds HILARIOUS For those who don't know, the premise is basically this: in the not too distant future, everybody is split into five specific skill sets, and if you have multiple skills/don't fit into these rigid standards it means you have SUPER POWERS and could overthrow the EVIL GOVERNMENT or something So they hunt down and kill everybody with a varied skill set I just... what this is amazing
Yeah, I have no clue why people are getting so hyped about this either. It sounds like an attempt to feed off of the young adult book-to-film adaptations hype that The Hunger Games film series has been making.
I saw the trailer and literally through it was the next Hunger Games movie Somewhere around the point where the girl tackles what appears to be a perfectly normal dog I figured something was up
And the big bad government hunts these people who don't fit into one specific area rather then, say, put them in their own group and insuring that a rebellion or the like won't happen. But that would make too much sense.
looked like a hunger games cash-in when i saw the trailer my sister read the books so i don't know if the books were that way as well but the movie is obv being aimed at that same audience like how vampires were everywhere when twilight first hit theaters. though not as offensively pandering as the sparkling vampire
What are yall talking about? This is what they teach you guys in school? I thought Divergent looked more like this
I actually read the book a while back. I will say, that the world built by Veronica Roth was really well done. It seemed to have a lot more planning put into it than most dystopian teen lit. Heck, it even started out pretty good. But, when they had to shove in the romance (seriously, it's crow barred in there), it just didn't add anything to the story at all and made the characters do stupid things. You have an actual strong female lead who can kick anyone's ass, but she is literally powerless without her freaking boyfriend. I saw the film on Friday and can say that it's a faithful adaption, which will please the fans of the books. It' has all the trappings of a YA movie, including the lead male taking off his shirt for no damn reason. The third act was a bit better done than in the book. I did enjoy the movie though. I went in expecting Twilight on steroids because the book was Twilight on steroids. And I got Twilight on steroids, and then some. The acting in this movie is much better than it deserves to be. What I find funny is that the main chick came out and slammed Twilight, calling it a depiction of unhealthy relationships. "She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she's going to kill herself!" While I do agree that Twilight is a bad example, this is the pot calling the kettle black. I mean, your character literally gives up fighting because your boyfriend walks away; how is that any better?
Hey, there could be people in the audience who appreciate a little man candy every now and again. I mean, that's usually why I start watching shows. Case in point: Teen Wolf and Reign.
I ACTUALLY FIND DYSTOPIAN LIT BEING POPULAR WITH TEENS TODAY RLY INSPIRING it means that this generation is recognizing the deep flaws of our society and being empowered to challenge and change them
That is... incredibly optimistic Honestly, I had that same view a year ago, then I had to do a research paper on the Hunger Games and realized that the sub culture it formed is basically the exact same as the one the book criticizes. Get the sexy Katniss look
I am probably overly optimistic about it, it is true. The Hunger Games has been really Hollywoodized (like you said, appearance, but also a lot of the promo for it is pushing the Gale Peeta nonsense that is barely in the books), but I am still very hopeful that kids have been smart enough to see through that (especially because, irony of ironies, THG directly critiques media culture and standards of beauty)
Proof once more that man was never meant to multi-task. Or something like that.... GOD, I'm so out of it I can't form a coherent joke. Anyway, I would watch it to see how it differs from Hunger Games as a film, just to please my curiosity. Horrible promise to watch a film as it will likely affect my ability to enjoy it but I'm a mindless sheep whose been following dystopian trends in literature lately, so F*** YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!~
Hey, I don't begrudge you it; I'm just saying that it's really no better than any other teen film out there. And you'll know it's coming when he just practically says "Hey, you want me to take off my shirt?"
I look at it more as fanservice. Like the multitudes of films/shows with scantily dressed females to appeal to men.
