I agree. I'm just saying there should be a balance in Disney, regular movies, etc. This would make everyone happy.

Aye, but as long as the issue of inequality, and indeed the facts of a lack of representation in all media forms of other races, genders, sexualities and so on, the need for more variety will arise. Sure good characters matter. But how do we challenge stereotypes if we don't show good characters from a variety of origins or with diverse characteristics? How can a white character really talk about black stereotypes without sounding unconvincing or potentially racist, thereby losing the audience? Or a male character describing a period? Diverse characters are good characters.

I relate more to Elsa and Anna than I do to most male protags.

But the issue here is that there's not enough male protags in a lot of people's eyes.

People are free to discuss what they want to.
If you don't want to talk about it they go hide under the covers.

This is a really easy perspective to take if you've never been bothered by an issue... but I invite you to speak to all of the non-white people who never see a protag who looks like them, someone who isn't straight never seeing anything but hetero relationships, or a trans person at all. It's not that simple. It would be nice if we didn't have to discuss this, if gender, race, sexuality representation in the media were equal... but it's not, and this is an incredibly dismissive statement.

If anyone is interested, I recently wrote an article about gender subversion & rebellion in The Hunger Games (i'm not really happy with it but that's neither here nor there). Here's a chunk of it:

I agree with this. Just the fact that the movie surrounds around a female character shouldn't mean that a male shouldn't be able to relate to it. On the other hand, just because a the main character is a female, doesn't mean a female can relate to her. For example, I've always related well to Princess Belle, Mulan, Kida, Merida and now, Elsa. The princesses as characters are pretty diverse. Regardless of the fact that we are both female, I can't relate to Ariel at all. And you're telling me that out of all these movies, you can't relate to a female character at all? They aren't all foolishly fawning over princes. Elsa didn't have a love interest at all, the movie revolved around her struggle to be accepted by other people and hiding herself away. These aren't concepts restricted to one gender or group of people.

And by the way, not all Disney movies have princesses or female leads. Do you forget Treasure Planet, Hunchback of Notredame, Journey to Atlantis, The Fox and the Hound, Peter Pan, Tarzan, and Aladdin? And not all of the princes are completely useless, prince Philip battles a ****ING DRAGON. I have and can relate to the main characters in all of these movies. I'm a human being, but can still relate to the themes of friendship between a fox and hound.

Kingdom Hearts...the main characters are Sora, Riku, and Kairi, but what has Kairi done besides get saved or live her life on the island? She doesn't contribute to the story at all or nearly as much as the boys do. I'm not going to complain about this, either. Sora is one of my favorite characters, and Riku is just as important. I wouldn't want the series any other way. I can relate to the male characters and not think twice about it. And what about Final Fantasy? There are many strong female characters, but we only got one game surrounding a female lead completely. And needless to say, I am not really a fan of the fan service that is X-2. As an industry video games are more directed towards a male audience...I MEAN JUST LOOK AT TIFA. Despite all of this, we still love games, and learn to relate to characters regardless of gender. It's all in the mindset of the person playing the games.

And Fearless was right in talking about Harry Potter as well. A lot of book series that I enjoy have male leads. Actually, the Hobbit doesn't have a female lead AT ALL. And despite the fact I appreciated that they added Tauriel in the film adaptation, I was not happy with the fact they would take so much creative liberty with someone else's work. If I can relate to a book about all male characters, there shouldn't be a huge double standard with this.

If we can accept media with male leads, you should be able to relate to media with female leads.

ok seems like no one understood what i was saying

I hate that this is something to be discussed. It shouldn't be an issue. I recognize that it is, but I don't like that people need to discuss it.

And what I said was directed at the main topic of the thread, Disney is for girls. Who cares what the target demographic for something is. Is the story good? Is it something kids should be watching at all? That's what people should be concerned with. I said literally nothing about the issue of recurrent white protags or male v. female protags.

And I don't know who said what about there being more female protagonists, I think I saw that somewhere, but if that's what they said that's complete shit.

    yeah no fucking joke

    Pixar's better anyway
