Listen, I'm just going to sum up my argument here:

Just because it's a culture, doesn't mean it's excused. I'm an American and this country has access to more types of meat than any other country. Veal is infant cow, that's where I draw the line personally and I certainly wouldn't post a thread showing a dead baby cow. I certainly know it wouldn't be approved. It'd be considered f*cked up. Just like this pic, it's grotesque. It's mangled, and disturbing to the eyes. Sure, it's a delicacy to some, but it doesn't make you more cultured to sit back and approve what is utterly sickening to others. It makes you pretty apathetic to a how a lot of people feel. In a forum for kids where we teach friendship is magic, I think it's pretty down right wrong to just ignore that. Especially if we police all other sensitivities.

9/10 times I go into a goodbye thread, it's because someone's upset and staff dos their best to make sure they won't be upset again. In Hector's good bye thread, that was deemed their job. Do I need to say this place pushed my eyes too far and make a thread saying I'm gone to see the slightest bit of action? A lock? A delete? A replacing of the picture to saying "So I found a duck embryo today. Pretty cool." He knew people could be upset by this and admitted it in the OP. That's not okay and is literally in your rule book. Do not post things that may upset or offend other users. Your rules.

    Alright.

A staff member had noticed the initial reports, and we (me and them) discussed at length about them. In the end, we had opted not to delete the post/thread, as it was a legitimate delicacy in another area. Google "balut" and you'll see it's a rather commonplace dish in the Phillipines, which quite a few members from here (including Railos) are from. By deleting the thread, that would be sending a rather rude message to these members -- "your food is gross, that is a gross part of your culture, pls remove urself".

I will say though, that we should have edited the OP to simply saying that it was this food rather than keep the images. That was on my guidance and I'm sorry for the people who had felt it was disturbing to see. However, I will also say that it's not right to bring up circumstances that you may have gone through and compare them to the situation occuring in this thread. It is also not right to compare them to, to be blunt, barely applicable examples.

The first is hardly applicable in and of itself considering this pictured dish is fully cooked and prepared. An animal that is clearly alive and being actively burned, is not. The second is a very extreme example, and one that is a complete outlier outside of very few tribal nations, who I doubt would be found posting on this site. (And in general, The Fallacy fallacy argument never really holds much weight nor proves a certain, concrete point).

If you saw no action being taken and was confused by this after sending in reports, come to a staff member. This thread is not about a departure thread from weeks ago, it's not about porn you may have posted, and it's certainly not a thread to compare figurative trouble rod sizes. I reiterate, it was a bad move to keep the picture rather than edit it out initially. By bringing this to our attention by explaining it out, it did help us to see that we dun goofed. But doing so in the thread itself is not the right way to go about it -- it only causes tensions to rise and the potential for people duking it out to grow more. Additionally, it also makes me lock threads and type essays such as this one.

Communication is a two way street. If you see or believe that an individual/group of staff members isn't handling a situation properly, message them or another staff member and let them know how you feel. This also applies to feelings of being targeted out by the staff. If you feel like you are, talk to us! None of us are mindreaders, and none of us certainly want to come on to see posts upon posts of feelings that you've kept bottled up for a while. No member on this site is perfect, and we all ecrtainly have our slip-ups and problems with one another. But the only way to solve that is by talking it out properly in private -- not in a thread that was, for all intents and purposes, about someone's dinner.

From now on, we will be wary of such content, and will advise people that if they do think the dish they're posting is gross, to skip out on the pictures and allow people to simply google it on their own time/ask for pictures in a private setting.

If you have any questions or concerns, whether it be regarding the thread or feeling victimized by staff action, please feel free to talk to us. My inbox has certainly not seen too much action the last two weeks. I am keeping this thread locked.

Railos, sorry that your thread had gotten turned upside down like this. Although I'm not particularly acquainted with the dish due to being MURRIKAN, I do hope you had a really nice dinner. :]
