Estimates say up to 50,000 people may have been killed, but no one really knows for sure yet. The number of homeless is a similar number.

    Five HUNDRED thousand!?
I heard 50,000... but neither number is a good toll.

Hope they can rescue everyone as quickly and safely as possible. I am at least glad to see that we are united as a race when it comes to disasters, and are charitable in both our funds and labour.

Oops, that was a typo on my part. 8D8

My family has already donated to Red Cross, and my school is having a fund-raising concert this weekend. It's the weekend before exams, too, so I think our student council and administration has really stepped up to the plate there. The outpouring of support is so immense. It gives me hope for the future.

The elementary school I'm teaching at wants to start getting a fundraiser underway to help out, and the college is having a meeting tomorrow to come up with other ideas to donate to the relief funds.

It's amazing how much of an outpouring I've seen in response to the quake. Really boosts my faith in humanity.

This is the last country that needs an earthquake like this.

Me! Me! Me! Except I don't want to punch him in the mouth. I want to make sure he can't spawn, and if he already has, then make sure he can't spawn any more.

How someone can get away with saying that is beyond me. Disgusting.

Off topic, but the website Luna posted used the wrong "hear", as in "hear this below" when referring to the radio show. They put "here". Amused I am.

My university has a donation program going on.
And the bookstore is also donating all merchandise with our former coach's name to Haiti.

    Have you heard about this?

    I found that pretty amazing.

EDIT: Also, I'm glad I haven't heard any bad news about the Dominican Republic. I have a lot of family there...

It's sad, really. I feel so sorry for these people. I also heard that Haiti is more known for having hurricanes instead of earthquakes. And that clearly these people could get a warning when a hurricane is coming. But for an earthquake, it's just all too sudden.

I'm glad to know people are donating, but I'm a bit surprised that my school hasn't said anything. They usually say something when it comes to things but apparently, we can only donate when it comes to an incident happening here in LA. Makes me hate my school even more.

There's a number out there that you guys can text to donate either $5 or $10. I don't know what the number(s) are...but it works by you getting your phone charged by the amount you donate and what's charged is donated.

I really can't say anything about the disaster itself though. You can't really express how bad it is without actually being there.

Text "Haiti" to 90999. You'll be charged ten dollars to your account which goes to Haiti.

The five dollar one was the word 'yele', but I can't remember the number you text the word to. I want to say it's the same number LilBueno posted, but I don't want anyone to goof up and text the wrong thing somewhere.

Yesterday I learned the janitor at my elementary school has family down there and he hasn't heard a thing from them since the quake, and he's all riled up and worried. I let him in the classroom yesterday to talk to me about it, and I gave him a huge hug afterwards and told him I was there for him if he needed an ear.

There's a lot of different numbers you can text. I wouldn’t trust the Yele one, read the article about the charity below. Ben Stiller is doing a charity thing as well, though I"m not sure what the website is. January 19 is "Wear Red for Haiti" day. I'm not a fan of symbolism, but it's better than nothing.
Let him know about this website, but there are still countless people that haven't registered on it

Just thought I'd update with some more news about it for those who are interested:

I understand the tradegy, and how terrible this is, but one of the main factors that drives me crazy is how people run to adopt and foster children from things like this, but there's an orphanage three hours away, and nobody bothers with helping them, or the homeless around here. It would almost make sense to help people closer to home before reaching out to help others, even in something like this.

    Anyway.

Considering how close Haiti is to some other countries, I'm surprised more places haven't had more damages. It's right next to the Dominican Republic, right? They haven't been mentioned much in any of the reports I've seen, which is curious. I hope they are able to help more people over there, and get the support they need.
