Especially in the intelligent discussion thread guys  Anyway, I went through a depression phase myself when I was younger, and I can say that it is something that is very real. I think the reason it is appearing more often is that our world has become so much more stressful, causing many more people to break down.

    Hmm...

Many people think Depression is for 'emo' or 'goth' people.

Many of them, however, have no idea it's a disorder. All it is, is people who are overly sensative, and tend to fall down slopes fast because of it.

I myself do, and so it's not like I'm a complete moron. xDDDDDD

But yeah...it's just a thing people have. I'm not sure if it's gentic or not...

I'm not wuite sure whether or not it is proven genetic, but I know its something that has been in my family before. I think it has a lot to do with the stressors in one's life that deplete your seratonin resources. So it may or may not be, but irregardless it is triggered by actions that happen during ones life.

i hardly think it's genetic. like twilightsown said, most of it is due to pressure, stress, and society. i think younger people get depressed also due to family issues, stress, etc. well that's at least how i was depressed.

    yah, maybe...
    - Depression is a challenge we all go through. If ure a kid, teen or an adult u may or may not get targeted. Depression is like a virus, contagious and sometimes deadly. Some people survive and some doesn't, it's a way to prove our worth in life.-

    -is that right?

Again, it's not ONLY the stressors.

If you didn't read my post, it all depends on the person's sensativity levels. I myself am not that sensative about the things you guys are mentioning. I have a seperate life that I need to attend to, so I can't concern myself with them. But regardless if I was or not, if you are very weak and fall victim to these feelings often or faster than others...it's not the stressor, it's the fact that the person cannot take the stress, and is ultimately depressed.

it's not literally a virus... i'm pretty sure. haha but as an analogy i don't think it's contagious. seriously, it's not. but ideas of depression and what people do when they're depessed to spread.

I suffer from depression, have since I was ten years old(was diagnosed with it at that age) I'm twenty-one now, and still have to take medication for it, if I dont I get to the point of wanting to just roll over and die. On top of that, I also suffer from Social Anxiety, meaning it is near impossible for me to function around large numbers of strangers, making me seem very shy when im not. Therefore it is very difficult for me to hold down a job, my doctor says I should file for disability because of it.

on the subject of it being degraded:
I dont think it has been 'degraded' but it is definatly a product of environment, and the world has become a lot harsher than it was before, so I believe the youth nowdays have it much harder than even some of us older people (15-20's) did when we were young. That being said, those that break under pressure are more liable to suffer from depression because of this. It will only get worse until the world is fixed and peace returned.

Depression can also be triggered by a traumatic experience. I was treated for it after my mum died. I think it is not really understood by most people, and I feel that pressure in modern society plays a big part in bringing depression to the front.

I think that depression is something that comes to you when nobody wants to help you. I've never gone through depression and never plan on it, maybe just because I have loads of friends that can back me up.

Someone once said that people who go on forums have no friends. Is this why so many of 'us' have depression?

I think not, because I have loads of friends in the US and England, and it doesn't affect me. I think depression stems from your childhood. Abuse, lack of friends and support, bullied, overweight - all these things contribute to become depressed.

Not to be a **** or anything, but I also think that emos and goths are more likely to be depressed because they let their 'depression' shield down.

No, Roxas. Goth and Emo people are Goth and Emo, because they ARE depressed. Not because they are goth or emo. I'm a very emotional person, but I can hold it out of sight rather easily. If I couldn't, I'd probably do what my cousin does and slit my wrist's.

    But I don't. There's a difference in depression.

I have loads of friends outside the forums and I was bullied. Maybe it did affect me, but I think there are a whole range of factors that affect depression, and bouts can be triggered by either one or a group of reasons. It doesn't mean that due to you fitting some of the criteria that you are depressed all the time. I'm normally upbeat and optimistic, and can cope with loads of things.

Okay, that still proves that emos and goths are depressed, and do cut their wrists.

I'm just saying that depressed people have been stereotyped, and the person who you thought was vibrant and cheery in school could be cutting themselves outside of school as well.

Cutting is bad. It doesn't help you. I'm not saying this to be immature, but it does nothing good.

Well, depression is contagious in a way. It's like emitting some kind of aura, people who get too close to the infected catch it themselves. That, in turn, infect others.

Cutting yourself has nothing to do with being depressed. It's just a way of depleting yourself of negative energy. It's not bad. The only pain that could ever come out of it is emotional pain.

I know, I've done it once before. It surprisingly doesn't hurt. Still, depression isn't about cutting yourself at all. Depression and emo are very close, yes, but cutting is a wrong-set stereotype...

    And that's coming from a friend of dozens of emo's. >__>;
