Demons and Heroes

Gharanth smiled. "You two head off to bed. I will keep guard for a while as I don't need as much sleep as you. I have a lot to think about it seems."

 

"You sure?" he asked.

 

"Of course. You can trust me you know. I am not in this for gain. I'm not really sure why I'm involved anymore. Nothing is straightforward."

 

"I do trust you, I was just making sure you weren't tired or anything."

 

"I'm not tired, just thoughtful. Things have happened and I'm questioning why I have done the things I have. I'm too old to change but young enough to understand it all. Does that make sense?"

 

"A little." he said. He yawned and said "Well then, I guess I'll just go to bed then."

 

Twilight sat in her tent. She had been tired a second ago but as soon as she sat down, her eyes just wouldn't close. She sighed and leaned up, listening to the night.

 

Gharanth nodded and smiled. He tended the fire and listened to the river. Which way should he go now? He was confused as to the emotions that he now allowed free. Would they make or break him?

 

Twilight groaned and stood up. She was always restless at night. She wondered if that was why her folks had named her twilight. Stepping out into the dark, she spotted Gharanth bent over the fire.

 

He lay down and closed his eyes.

 

Gharanth began quietly humming to himself. He was unaware that he was being watched. For a short time he was able to let his guard down and relax.

 

Twilight grinned at the deamon. He had been so uptight when she'd met him this morning. She was happy to see there was someone hiding under his rough look. Someone who really cared.
She took several quiet steps closer, grinning all the while.
She laughed a little .

 

Gharanth heard the laughter and jumped. Spinning round he raised his defenses. Fire balls appeared in his hands. He saw Twilight and relaxed. "Sorry to frighten you. I just react if I'm not sure what's happening."

 

"Well as long as you don't roast me, it's good you're on your toes." She came and sat across from him near the fire, hugging her cloak in the night. "Don't stop humming on my account. It was nice."

 

"just something I used to sing to someone a long time ago. I once had a life that was rich and full of laughter. Now I feel people are safest if I hide away. Some things are lost never to return. It's an old demon lullaby by the way. I miss the old life at the palace though I am freer now."

 

Cole soon fell asleep.

 

"You are too hard on yourself, my friend." Twilight shook her head and put her slim fingers closer to the fire. "No one should have to hide away...especially not you."
She stared into the fire. "And you can remake your new life to make it just as good as your old. If you really want to."

 

"The truth is I changed. I am no longer safe around people. Something happens and I lose all memory. People get hurt, even killed. I dare not let my guard down in case the worst happens to my friends. Something snapped inside me and things can never be the same as they were. I will always walk alone."

 

"But you don't have to walk alone!" Twilight raised her voice for the first time since she'd met him but quickly brought it down to a whisper. "No one has to. No one deserves to." She closed her eyes and turned her head.
"You have friends, Gharanth. People who care about you. People who want to help you whatever the cost." She shivered a little, her Navy colored eyes staring at him, holding his eyes on hers.
"If you'd just wake up!"

 

"I believe you are angry at me for telling the truth. I caused a massacre, does that mean nothing. I will always be dangerous. I would love to have friends and a family but it just isn't going to happen."
