Demons and Heroes

BIC: Natalie was relieved..Her heart pounding.She was terrified...She turned and was gonna walk back to the others, but instead she stepped off the bank and into the icy river..

 

Aroe listened as he lay in the snow, eyes half closed. She was calming down a bit. That was good. Maybe it wasnt Gharanth...

 

Gharanth ran, following the footprints. The girl was an idiot. His raced to the riverbank and found Natalie. "Remember me Rabbit. Shall we hunt again. I'll give you a lead, I'm kind like that." He smiled showing sharp white fangs. "Let's play, pet. You'll die in the icy water. I can warm you up."

 

Natalie pulled herself out slowly on the other side of the river...She laid down in the cold snow..Whe was shivvering..Her heart pounding faster cause she knew Gharanth would kill her...She couldn't move any of her body..She felt stiff...

 

Her heart was faster than ever. The sound hurt Aroe's head but he didn't want to dull it out. If she was in danger...he needed strength. He pulled himself out of the snow, breathing in a few welcome breaths. He hadn't realized how close he was to the river. How close he was to Gharanth.

 

"Come out, come out where ever you are....." Gharanth enjoyed taunting his prey. He noticed a flash of light on the other side of the river. "Found you. Now we can really play. I'll share a fire with you, that will help you warm up. He waded across the river, steam rising from where he passed. "Hello pretty........."

 

Natalie closed her eyes waiting for her death...Tears rolling down her cheek as her lips were purple from the coldness and she was shaking....Her breathing wasn't normal and her heart started slowing down...

 

Gharanth gathered wood and made a fire near to Natalie. He set it ablaze with a fireball. "I'm evil but I'm not a monster. There is no sport in hunting one so helpless. I guess by your expression you expected me to kill you straight away. No such luck. I will haunt your nightmares and stalk you for as long as I choose. I assume you have an orb. You are not strong enough to keep it so hand it over and I will consider leaving you alone."

 

'NONONONONO!' Aroe's mind was screaming over Natalie's heartbeats. They were slow and iregular. He watched Gharanth stand before her.
"Oh no you don't..." He whispered.
A sudden wind swept him up into the sky and straight at Natalie on the other side of the river. Who cared about Gharanth. Natalie was his only thought.

 

"Gah, not again." Gharanth spun and hurled a fireball at Aroe. "You are a pesky bloodsucking insect. If I was going to kill your girlfriend she would be dead now. I haven't even drawn my sword."

 

Natalie look at Gharanth...
"I can't give you the orb.." she said still shivering..She sat up and put her arms around herself...

 

Aroe felt his face go red. Girlfriend?...He tried to forget it but couldn't as he swirved away from the fireball.
He watched Gharanth sit by Natalie who didn't look good at all.
"Fine..." He muttered. "But i'm staying too." He sat down, not giving Gharanth time to argue.

 

"So you have a boyfriend Rabbit. He is a demon, just like me. He would tear your heart out in a different time. At least I am what I appear to be. It would be better if you gave me the orb. It would be safer."

 

"Don't pester her, Gharanth!" His face was still burning from his comment. But it struck a truth. He was a deamon. She was...perfect...And although he'd never think about hurting her...he was sure she feared him.
Aroe turned away a bit, not wanting eather of them to see his weakness.

 

"You don't understand.. I CAN'T!" she said as she looked down...
"My father gave the orb to me after he killed the demon who possesed it and who almost killed me...I've been scared of them...and before he died I swore I would never lose the orb and I would keep it out of the clutches of demons," she said as a tear went back down her cheek..

 

"Listen boy, time for me to tell you kiddies a story. Once upon a time there was a Demon General. He fought hard and was well respected by his troops. He was from a proud Demon family who arranged a marriage for him. She did not love him even though he loved her and she ran away with the man she did love. Despite the General's protests for them to be left they were hunted down and butchered. That night he swore never to feel again. He remembers the signs though. You love the girl so don't deny it. You are talking to that General now, only things have changed."

 

'Damn it...' Aroe hissed to himself, eyes closing at the pain in his heart.
She feared deamons. She feared him. And Gharanth was cutting him deep. He felt a tinge of sympothy for her and wanted to say something but feared his voice would betray him

 

Gharanth nodded. "You can keep the orb for now. I told you my story. Whether you believe it or not is up to you. Demons are capable of feelings, deep emotion. He loves you and you have to deal with it. I will respect you because of my past. I don't kill helpless women or children. If we fight however all bets are off. I will take my leave."

Gharanth waded back across the river and disappeared into the forest.

 

Natalie sat there still shaking...
"I'm sorry Aroe...I can't love a demon.." she said tears flowing down her cheek...She laid back down on the ground still shivering...She closed her eyes...

 

Aroe swallowed hard, ignoring the over throw all together and spinning around so his back was to her. Without a word, he wiped his dripping nose and jumped into the air wind wisping him into the clouds.
What had he expected? He was a deamon...she was...perfect...but even as he thought this, tears escaped his eyes and dripped down into the snow in front of Natalie. He didn't care if he froze to death. It didn't matter. Nothing mattered...
