What do you prefer? I don't mind either. There is one thing that intrigues me, though: Quite a while before I left BC Forums a few months ago (it was full of jerks, including the management), I asked if it would be possible to implement dark styles, and a lot of people objected saying they preferred light styles. Obviously, it's all down to personal opinion, but looking at XenForo, there are four style categories: light, dark, seasonal, and other. Only doing light and dark, combining the number of styles in those categories, there are 212 styles total. Of those 212 styles, there are 145 light styles and 67 dark styles, which makes the ratio 145/67. To be more precise, 68% of the styles are light and 32% of the styles are dark. Anyway, essentially, dark styles seem pretty rare, and not only that, but most of the dark styles cost money, whereas most of the light styles are free. What do you guys think? Are dark styles going out of style or what? I'm also going to tag @Misty since this is her area of expertise. Discuss.
i like dark styles because i have no soul. no but really they're just easier on the eyes IMO. Black on white is super easy to read.
I don't personally have a preference, though I like having the option of both. There are benefits to both -- light styles tend to be more friendly to the casual user, since that's what so many popular sites use, while dark styles are more popular on gaming sites (and definitely on KHV). People like to claim that light styles are "more readable" but I think that's really BS, it's more down to user preference and the typography (as well as the contrast between the text and the background). Having the option for a dark style is also important, I feel, because it can severely reduce your energy consumption -- it sounds minor for a site like KHV, but for I think Earth Day a while back YouTube went dark. For a site of that size & popularity, it could make a big difference. Dark styles are harder to design though.
I like both, but prefer the light style for when I'm outside. It's really hard to see a dark screen with direct sunlight. That's why I wish we had a light skin for mobile, but oh well.
Obligatory "why no light style on KH-V post" here. As for energy consumption, how exactly do dark styles lower the consumption? Wild guess, but the brighter the screen, the more electricity is used?
I tend to do a lot of late-night browsing, so dark styles make things easier on my eyes. Light skins are killer in the dark or when you've just woken up...
dark is easier on my eyes therefore i like it better and i just think it looks better overall though im not opposed to light styles
Usually my preference is whatever Misty makes. KHV is always so purty, especially since it stopped hurting my eyes
I used to like my boards dark (like my soul /slitslit) but now I just want bright, warm colors everywhere (like my soul???)
I like being able to switch depending on mood and location. Generally prefer darker ones for KHV because it's the atmosphere I'm used to.
I prefer the dark for KHV but I think that is because it's what I'm used to and what I've always had and associated with KHV. We've had default light styles and I got on with them fine but I just prefer them like this.
