Because of this thread, I suddenly got the idea to make a thread where I post a random fact every day! =D

Random Facts So Far:
February 16th: The first spacecraft to land on an asteroid wasn't even designed to land.
February 17th: Christopher Columbus, one of Italy's most famous pastaphiles, was born in October, National Pasta Month.

explanation: NEAR (Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous) had been circling the asteroid Eros for about a year before it began to run out of fuel for its boosters. Controllers back on earth, decided to drop it onto the asteroid to try and save some of the equipment on board. NEAR was being used to collect images of the asteroid but was not designed to land.
